Licking County River Round Up

Licking County River Round Up Licking County River Roundup is a volunteer-driven, county-wide, annual clean up event in the Licking River Watershed, Licking County, Ohio.

The River Round Up began as a Newark City Litter initiative in 1988 to clean up the Licking River. The annual river clean up brought out hundreds of volunteers who pulled tires, shopping carts and mountains of trash from an 18 mile stretch of the river. Through their efforts, a river that had all but been abandoned, has seen a rebirth of aquatic and bird life. Due to the closing of a canoe livery

and the changing of staff, the River Round Up ended in 2003. After a break of eight years, several Licking County and City of Newark agencies came together to bring back the River Round Up in 2011. In 2014, for the 20th anniversary of the River Round Up, our goal is to continue to branch out into the community and clean up more waterways throughout the county. We succeeded by expanding the clean up to Pataskala, Union Township, Granville, and Hebron, in addition to maintaining the clean ups in Newark, Blackhand Gorge, St. Louisville, and Buckeye Lake. In 2015, Shackleford's Disposal came on board as our Presenting Sponsor. We added the City of Heath as a new clean up location near Hoback Park and The Dawes Arboretum joined the committee. Every year, we increase the number of volunteers that come out to participate in our annual event, the amount of trash pulled out of the river, and the mileage of river cleaned! Join us this year to do your part in keeping our waterways clean!

What's the craziest thing we found during our 30th River Roundup❔❔ A Truck!

At Riverview Reserve, some community members found an abandoned truck. Some may not think of the environmental effects that could come from abandoning a car near a water source... but there are PLENTY!🛻

Cars and trucks contain many dangerous contaminants such as gas, oil, broken glass, and battery acid. In fact, this specific truck left behind a visible oil spill in the river after being pulled out. 🪫

River Roundup is such an important event to the community for these reasons! By picking up trash, tires, and even trucks, we are helping to remove contaminants from ecosystems and our community.
