The Youth Leadership Council (YLC) of Licking County is an award-winning, youth-led prevention project comprised of high school students who collaboratively work to help make Licking County a happy, healthy, safe and drug free place to live, work and go to school. Through community services, civic engagement, prevention education and leadership development; the YLC strives to educate, inform and i

Does anger make you feel trapped? Read below for additional coping strategies when dealing with anger.

Anger can make you feel trapped and changing your surroundings can help with those feelings. Whether you’re mad at someone in the same room as you or just angry at the world, sometimes physically relocating yourself can help you start to calm down. Go to another room or step outside for a few minutes of fresh air to help disrupt the track that your mind is on.

The final YLC Spotlight for Cycle 10 is Katie Davis! Katie has been on council for two years and is currently serving as the Communications Director. Katie is a senior at Licking Valley High School where she operates as the Historian in National Honor Society and the Section Leader of the flutes in Marching Band. Additionally, Katie is involved in Tri-M, Combo, Concert Band, and Venture Youth to Youth. Thank you for your continuous support of YLC and its members. This week’s YLC Spotlight is Sarah Selfinger! Sarah has been on council for two years; She has served as the Leadership Development Director for Cycle 9 and is currently the President of Cycle 10. During her time on council, Sarah has operated as the Project Leader for last year’s prevention education project as well as Project Quarantine which was used to boost morale during the beginning stages of the Corona Virus. Sarah is a junior at Watkins Memorial High School where she participates in Stage Crew for the musical, Drug Free club, and Student Council. This week’s YLC Spotlight is Sophee Engle! Sophee has been on council for two years. Sophee is a junior at Watkins Memorial High School where she participates in track and field as well as musical. This year, Sophee is excited to be casted as Ursula in The Little Mermaid Musical. Additionally, Sophee is involved in summer theater at Sterling Summer Youth Theater in Pataskala. Dr. Laura Berman is mourning the death of her teenage son after a drug overdose.

"My beautiful boy is gone. 16 years old. Sheltering at home," she captioned a photo of the two of them. "A drug dealer connected with him on Snapchat and gave him [fentanyl] laced Xanax and he overdosed in his room."

"They do this because it hooks people even more and is good for business but I causes overdose [sic] and the kids don't know what they are taking," she continued. "My heart is completely shattered and I am not sure how to keep breathing. I post this now only so that not one more kid dies. We watched him so closely. Straight A student. Getting ready for college. Experimentation gone bad. He got the drugs delivered to the house. Please watch your kids and WATCH SNAPCHAT especially. That's how they get them."

This week’s YLC Spotlight is Becky Slone! Becky has been on Council for two years and served as a Project Leader last year. During her time on Council, Becky has participated in the TURN Coalition, Summit Planning Committee, and the Licking County Wellness Coalition. Becky is a junior at Lakewood, but she’s graduating early to pursue a career in Nursing at Cedarville University. Additionally, she is involved in Quiz Bowl, “Let’s Talk,” tutoring, National Honor Society, FCCLA, and Spanish Club where she operates as president. Becky is employed at Panera Bread and enjoys teaching kids and helping the community in her spare time. Check back soon to see another amazing YLC Spotlight!

This week’s YLC Spotlight is Landen Davis! Landen has been on council for two years. She is a junior at Johnstown High School where she participates in cross country, track, band and choir. This week’s YLC Spotlight is Shelby Heist! Shelby is a first year member on council. She is a sophomore at Lakewood High School where she serves as the Student Council Class President and a representative for the Licking Land Trust. In addition, Shelby is also involved in in drama, marching band, soccer, swim team, 4-H, BSA Venture Crew, and the Zanesville Rifle Club. Come back soon to see the next YLC Spotlight!
