We had a wonderful evening yesterday celebrating Jewish Heritage Month. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our honorees!

Congratulations to:
✡️Robin Schlager of Montclair
✡️Congregation Ahavas Sholom in Newark
✡️Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz, accepted by Cantor Lucy Fishbein, of Temple B'nai Jeshurun in Short Hills

We also took the opportunity to surprise our dear colleague, Commissioner Patricia Sebold, with a special recognition for all her support for the Essex County Jewish community and community at large. She will be retiring at the end of this year after 33 years in office, the longest serving Commissioner in New Jersey. She is a devoted public servant and a dear friend, and she is leaving behind some gargantuan shoes to fill.

Special thanks to Livingston Mayor Shawn Klein and Assemblywoman Rosy Bagolie for giving remarks, to Cantor Lucy Fishbein for an excellent musical performance, to Rabbi Max Edwards of Temple B'nai Abraham for conducting opening and closing prayers, to our hosts the Livingston Municipal Building, and to Rep. LaMonica McIver and Rep. Analilia Mejia for providing certificates for our honorees.

Our statement on the issues at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark:

"The Essex County Board of County Commissioners joins Governor Sherrill, Senator Kim, and Reps. McIver, Mejia, Menendez, Pallone, and Pou in calling for the closure of the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark. Detained individuals, most of which have never been convicted of a crime, must receive a bond hearing in accordance with their constitutionally protected right to due process.

For months, the Board of County Commissioners has demanded answers from DHS on the conditions in Delaney Hall, but received no responses. The facility is operating illegally and unconstitutionally, and must be closed. We are a nation of laws and rights that must be enforced universally, or else they are no laws at all."
