Morris Canal Greenway

Morris Canal Greenway Work is underway to create a 111-mile continuous greenway along the former Morris Canal For additional information, visit MorrisCanalGreenway.org.

This page is maintained by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, which coordinates the Morris Canal Working Group. The goal of the Morris Canal Working Group (MCWG) is to preserve, to the greatest extent possible, the former Morris Canal right of way for conversion into a public greenway. The NJTPA does not maintain the physical greenway, individual segments are maintained by counties and municipalities.

📜 in 1858, George P. Macculloch passed away at his home in Morristown.

Remembered as the “Father of the Morris Canal,” Macculloch was a community leader, businessman, and agriculturalist whose influence helped shape Morristown's and New Jersey's future. Yet a letter written just one year before his death reveals a more personal side—his role as a devoted grandfather.

On June 25, 1857, the 81-year-old Macculloch wrote to his 21-year-old grandson, Henry Miller:

“The little of eyesight which remains to me cannot be better expended than in giving you my parental advice and benediction. From infancy to manhood... you have heard the teachings of Religion and seen the examples of morality. Your duties to God and to Man must be imprinted on your mind...”

Macculloch closed the letter with words that proved prophetic:

“This letter has been a painful and tedious task for my eyes. It is perhaps the last you will ever receive from me... Adieu then, my child. Your image will form part of that beloved group upon which my last worldly thoughts will linger...”

George Macculloch's legacy lived on through his descendants. Henry Miller (1836-1904), a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, served with the U.S. Navy’s African Squadron, helping patrol the West African coast to suppress the transatlantic slave trade before the Civil War. He later served in several naval engagements during the Civil War before returning to Morristown, where he became a respected civic leader and served as mayor from 1880–1881.

From grandfather to grandson, the values of service, leadership, and community left an enduring mark on Morristown history.
