“If we call housing affordable in Newark, Newarkers should be able to afford it.”

Mayor Ras J. Baraka breaks down his proposed legislation to redefine affordability based on what Newark residents actually earn.

Mayor Baraka has introduced legislation (Keeping Newark Affordable) to make Affordable Housing in Newark truly affordable. The problem has been that the Federal Government and the State of New Jersey are using an eligibility standard that excludes many Newarkers.

The Feds and State base eligibility on the median income of the region: $138,400 which includes many wealthy suburbs. This is double the median income of Newark residents. Using regional income to determine eligibility for housing is highly unfair.

By using Newark's true median income of $58,490 to determine eligibility for affordable housing, thousands of additional Newark residents will become eligible.

That’s a big difference!

Today, five community grocery stores opened their doors across our city. 🥦🥕🍅

This is what it looks like when City government and trusted community organizations come together around one goal:
fresh affordable food within reach of every Newark resident.

This network is powered by the organizations already doing the work in our neighborhoods:
La Casa de Don Pedro, Clinton Hill Community Action, Mantena, and St. James.

Together, we are creating permanent places where Newark families can access groceries, fresh produce, and everyday essentials at affordable prices. Right in the communities where they live.

We’re open! Go visit! Go shop! Support your community grocery store!
