I had the pleasure of touring the future homes of The Bronx’s Hip-Hop Museum and The Bronx’s Children Museum with Deputy Speaker Nantasha Williams and my colleagues in the Bronx delegation.

When it comes to the Art that defines the New York of today, The Bronx has been the birthplace for generations of innovative creatives.

The youth of The Bronx in the ‘70s had their artistic expression framed as a sign of blight, yet the galleries and venues of Downtown were lining up to put their work in front of thousands.

But now we have yet another space of our own to proudly display our art right here where it all began in The Bronx.

🎣 A $25 MILLION catch for Hunts Point!

Today I was joined by Speaker Julie Menin and Bronx Delegation Co-Chair Amanda Farias as we celebrated reeling in a major investment to modernize the Fulton Fish Market! This money will replace aging refrigeration infrastructure to drastically cut emissions, as well as open the market to community tours, and create a demonstration kitchen for classes, programming, and new economic opportunities. This is how we build stronger communities and unlock our full potential!

Thank you to Speaker Julie Menin, the Fulton Fish Market Co-Op, and all of our government and community partners for coming to the table and making this happen.

This summer Jake served as a legislative intern under River in our office. Keeping up with all the legislation going on in City Council and our office is no small task but Jake made it look easy.

In his 3 months with us he wrote a variety of policy memos. Bouncing from Sanitation to housing, Jake helped shape the laws that’ll improve the city we love.

Thank you Jake and enjoy Junior year! River will miss having you in his corner.

While conducting negotiations for the FY27 budget, I used every tool at my disposal to advocate to get the Hunts Point Redevelopment Projects off the ground. I had numerous conversations with the Mayor and Speaker directly and even took my colleagues in Council on a tour of the markets where they saw firsthand the urgent need to launch this transformational project which will have a major impact on grocery prices, union jobs, and above all the community that surrounds the markets.

For generations, the South Bronx’s quality of life and public health has suffered from bearing the brunt of the pollution and truck traffic that comes with serving as the food distribution hub for our entire city and region. We have carried that burden while feeding millions of New Yorkers, and our community deserves to share in the benefits of the economic engine that lives in its backyard.

My efforts were a success. $25 Million was allocated to the Fulton Fish Market because its cooperative came to the table ready to be a partner in the future of Hunts Point and presented a tangible plan to drastically reduce carbon emissions and open their space up to the community. That investment is a success story and proof of what is possible when market operators, government, workers, and the community are willing to work toward the same goal.

Unfortunately, the owners of the produce market have not demonstrated that same willingness. The City and State governments are prepared to make an extraordinary public investment of hundreds of millions of dollars into this critical food supply infrastructure, and taxpayers should not be expected to shoulder an even greater burden of responsibility simply because private market owners refuse to make a reasonable investment in their own future.

The produce co-op must remember that it is in fact a co-op. The threat of leaving further reaffirms its owners’ lack of commitment to the community and their workers. They have a tremendous opportunity to build a stronger market and a brighter future for Hunts Point.

My door is open to anyone ready to seize this opportunity and deliver the redevelopment this community needs.
