"He's a real hero. It's an amazing thing. And he's a real lucky guy, too. God was watching you, right?" -

President Donald Trump praises 16-year-old hero lifeguard Ryder Williams during a special visit at the Oval Office White House, weeks after Williams rescued a 10-year-old boy from the dangerous Santa Cruz surf.

Barrak Hussein Obama Presidential Center Opens in Chicago

The Barack Obama Presidential Center officially opened to the public on Friday, June 19, 2026, coinciding with the Juneteenth holiday. After more than a decade of planning and construction, the $850 million campus held a star-studded dedication ceremony on June 18, attended by former President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, living former presidents and first ladies, and performers including Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, and Jennifer Hudson.

Location and Design

The Center is located at 6001 S. Stony Island Ave. in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, next to the University of Chicago and blocks from Lake Michigan. The 19-acre campus was chosen for its connection to the Obama family’s history. Barack and Michelle Obama met, married, and raised their children on the South Side, where Obama began his work as a community organizer before entering the Illinois State Senate, U.S. Senate, and the presidency.

The campus was designed to be more than a museum. It includes sustainable features such as geothermal heating and cooling and 507 solar panels. The landscape includes the Eleanor Roosevelt Fruit and Vegetable Garden, Wetland Walk, Great Lawn, playground, and a sledding hill added at Michelle Obama’s request.

Facilities and Exhibits

Unlike traditional presidential libraries, the Obama Center does not house paper archives. Obama described it as “a hub for change” rather than a monument to the past.

Key buildings include:
1. Museum Tower: An 8-story, 225-foot tower with a Sky Room offering views of Chicago and Lake Michigan. Exhibits feature a full-scale replica of the Oval Office, Michelle Obama’s inaugural gowns, Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, items from the 2008 campaign, and 28 commissioned artworks.
2. Forum: A free-entry building with an auditorium, classrooms, restaurant, café,
