YWCA of the City of New York

YWCA of the City of New York YW-NYC is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. linktr.ee/ywcanyc

YWCA of the City of New York was launched in 1858, based on an idea developed in London a few years earlier. Their goal was to provide a haven for young women — both U.S. and foreign-born — by offering safe housing and educational resources. The organization filled an important void in 19th Century New York and quickly grew. In the 1870s, the YW led the way in job training and initiated the first

typewriting instruction for women, the first sewing machine classes and the first employment bureau for women. In 1912, the YW expanded and built its own training center, with a residence and spacious meeting rooms, at 610 Lexington Avenue. In 1915, the YWCA bought the 610 Lexington Avenue building and opened the first public swimming pool in New York state. It housed the YWCA national offices, national board meeting rooms and residence facilities until 1980, and was the New York City headquarters until 2005. With its historic mission to improve the welfare of girls and women who needed assistance with housing, job training, s*x education classes, access to books, physical fitness, and friendship, and as a pioneer in race relations, labor union representation, and women’s health initiatives, the YW soared to the forefront of most major movements. Today’s YW is one of the oldest and largest membership organizations in the world. It is independently owned and operated, but connected to a worldwide network of sister YWCAs that serve 25 million people, in more than 100 countries. The YW stands for the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women. The YW focuses its resources on helping communities in-need, with four affordable high-quality childcare centers in Manhattan, Staten Island and Brooklyn, and after school programs in lower Manhattan, Coney Island and Brownsville, Brooklyn. The YW opened its first Family Resource Center in 2006, continuing to shape the generations of children and women to come.

marks the day freedom reached those who had long been denied it—and reminds us how far we still must go. At YWCA NYC, our commitment to eliminating racism is not symbolic; it’s constant, urgent, and actionable. Today, we honor Black liberation, confront injustice, and recommit to building a future rooted in equity and dignity for all.

NYC, it's time to make your voice heard!

Early voting for New York City’s primary election began Saturday, June 13, and runs through June 21. Election Day is June 23.

The leaders elected in local races make decisions that affect our neighborhoods every day—from schools and housing to transit, healthcare, and community resources.

Primaries are open to voters enrolled in a party, so take a minute to check your registration and party enrollment, then make a plan to vote.

ALL young people deserve access to safe, respectful healthcare. Gender-affirming care is healthcare. It is autonomy, dignity, safety, and support. And for many, it is life-saving.

The YWCA NYC stands with trans communities and advocates for a future where everyone can access the healthcare they need without barriers, fear, or stigma. 🏳️‍⚧️

Last Friday, YWCA NYC joined Deloitte Impact Day 2026 at PS 298 in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Over 20 Deloitte volunteers, Board Member Diane Sinti, and our staff worked together to host a community career fair.

Deloitte volunteers offered one-on-one coaching, giving advice on job searching, resume writing, and interview skills. These sessions helped attendees feel more confident about finding new career opportunities.

Families could also pick out professional clothing, thanks to donations from Delivering Good, to help with their job search. While parents and caregivers focused on career development, YWCA NYC staff provided activities and care for their children.

We are very thankful to the Deloitte team for sharing their time, knowledge, and encouragement. Your support helped our community members take meaningful next steps toward their professional goals.

Pride is being seen. Pride is being celebrated. Pride is knowing you belong exactly as you are.

For young people, having adults who affirm, respect, and support them makes all the difference. Our team strives to be those trusted adults, creating spaces where kids feel safe and comfortable to be themselves.

Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈

For their end-of-semester showcase, PS 298 students celebrated all the skills, techniques, and teamwork they've built through tennis this year.

Each student was gifted their own tennis racket by the incredible instructor team from Johnny Mac Tennis Project, to continue practicing these skills at home. Programs like tennis help young people build confidence and stay active.

Our community at Urban Assembly Academy for Future Leaders came together for a Rose Celebration to honor the mothers, caregivers, and loved ones who support our students every day.

Students shared heartfelt pieces they wrote in appreciation of their families and supporters. We closed out the day with the YWCA Flower Bar, where families created bouquets to take home. 💐
