The Let Us Breathe Fund is still the ONLY fund in New York where Black organizers award grants to Black-led grassroots groups.

North Star Fund launched the fund the year after the murder of Eric Garner by police in Staten Island, as New Yorkers filled the streets demanding accountability and justice. We made a commitment to invest in the people leading the fight for change, and that commitment continues today.

As Black and Brown communities continue to face state violence and systemic anti-Blackness, our grantees organize to end police violence and incarceration while building toward Black liberation.

We’re grateful to the Black organizers, strategists and early supporters who made this fund possible. Now we’re inviting you to be part of that legacy.

Our community has experienced attacks on democracy for all of our 45+ years.

Through it all, our grantee partners have been united by their unwavering belief in human dignity. However flawed our democracy may be, our shared commitment is to make it better.

Our latest grants are a $7.4 million investment in the thousands of New Yorkers doing the work to preserve dignity and strengthen democracy. $6 million of these are three-year grant commitments.

There is a lot to fight against, and so much more to build.
