Today, New York City public school children return to the classroom!

While this is a welcome relief for families relying on school breakfasts and lunches, it also brings the inevitable strain of back-to-school costs.

For families living paycheck to paycheck, this excitement coincides with real financial stress. Between rising costs of school supplies, clothes, and classroom essentials, household budgets continue to be stretched beyond their limits.

At Crossroads, we believe in coming together as a community to ensure everybody eats!

Happy Labor Day!

Originating during the Industrial Revolution to honor the achievements and resilience of American workers, Labor Day is deeply rooted in the values of strength, prosperity, and well-being. (Fun fact: New York was actually the very first state to introduce a bill recognizing the holiday!)

Today at Crossroads, we celebrate all of our hard-working neighbors, labor union members, and their families who keep our city running.

Our mission is simple: our doors are always open, and everyone in our community has an equal right to dignity, respect, and a warm meal.

Twenty Two volunteers joined us from the Office of Investments Cornell University. One group helped set up the pantry for distribution - bagging fresh produce - apples, potatoes, onions, and assembled creamer packets for distribution with coffee during breakfast service.

The second group assembled 225 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Sandwiches were then distributed with dinner services, in partnership with the coalition for the homeless, that same evening.

With the efforts and care of these volunteers, our community was fed and served with dignity!

Today is Women’s Equality Day, marking the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment granting women the right to vote.

While we commemorate this milestone in civil rights, we also recognize that true equity requires basic human dignity - including reliable access to healthy food.

Today, women—especially single mothers and women of color—are disproportionately impacted by food insecurity by over 35%.

At Crossroads Community Services, our mission goes beyond hunger relief, we aim to lift up the women and families in our NYC community every single day.
