Meet the Numbat, a small but mighty marsupial from Australia that thrives on a very specific diet — termites, and lots of them!
🐜 This daytime insectivore can eat up to 20,000 termites a day, using its long, sticky tongue and excellent sense of smell to sniff them out in logs and underground tunnels.
🦊 With reddish fur, a bushy tail like a squirrel’s, and bold white stripes across its back, the numbat looks like a tiny woodland fox — but it’s actually more closely related to the extinct Tasmanian tiger than to any rodent!
🌞 Unlike most marsupials, numbats are diurnal — active during the day. They spend their daylight hours foraging and their nights sleeping in hollow logs or burrows.
⚠️ Once widespread across southern Australia, the numbat is now endangered, with fewer than 1,000 left in the wild due to habitat destruction and predation by foxes and cats.
🛡️ Conservation programs and predator-proof reserves are helping this fascinating creature make a comeback.
