We have lost an institution and icon. I’ll always cherish the opportunity I had in August 2024 to see and hear Dolly in person when she visited the The Historic Lyric here in Lexington to celebrate our Imagination Library partnership (here’s a brief clip from that day with her talent on full display). She wasn’t just a talented artist—she was a humanitarian, a keen businesswoman, and a champion for children and literacy. She understood, better than almost anyone, the power of a good story and a hearty laugh to make anyone feel like a neighbor.

Her legacy lives on not just in her music, but in every child whose hands—and imagination—she filled with a book.

District teams will be on hand today to support our students, staff, and families returning to school today in the wake of Saturday's horrific tragedy especially at Academies of Bryan Station High School, Frederick Douglass High School, Henry Clay High School, Lexington Middle School, Success Academy, and William Wells Brown Elementary.

Our Employee Wellness team is available to provide direct support to staff. Additionally, professional counseling and grief resources are available 24/7 through our EAP Services (KY Services) at (502) 219-3488.

FCPS Law Enforcement continues to be in close contact with the Lexington Police Department and there is no indication of a safety threat to our schools.

This tragedy has shaken our community. And it has reminded us of two fundamental truths: 1) Our schools do far more than just educate--we serve as sources of strength and unity in perilous times. And 2) Our community is stronger when we work together.

Thank you to ONE Lexington and all of our partners for working with us to support our students and school communities.

Our community is grieving after last night's shooting at Charles Young Park, which killed one young person and injured four others. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone who was at what should have been a night of celebration.

I know we are all heartbroken and FCPS is committed to supporting students, staff, and families impacted by this tragedy. We will have counselors and support teams available at multiple schools in the area tomorrow. More information will be shared by each school and I encourage you to reach out directly to your school if you need someone to talk to.

We will continue working closely with our community partners as we all strive to keep our kids and neighborhoods safe.

It's been a busy summer even though it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating our graduations. But tomorrow the Class of 2027 will be starting their last first day!


This week, I've spent time both preparing my own classroom and visiting schools and events around Fayette County as we prepare for a new school year.

I've loved the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm I've encountered from students, staff, and families. They know the power and promise of our public schools. And they know our public schools are the foundation of our community.

That’s why we’re focused on ensuring a smooth start to the school year.

Tomorrow represents a new beginning for FCPS rooted in a longstanding commitment we share: ensuring the success of each and every child who enters our doors.
