His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan was awarded the 2022 Blue Planet Prize by the Asahi Glass Foundation of Japan.
Her Royal Highness Sonam Dechan Wangchuck received the prestigious Prize on behalf of His Majesty the Fourth King in Tokyo on October 5, 2022 during the Prize Award Ceremony that was attended by Their Imperial Highnesses Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino of Japan, representatives from the government and scientific community of Japan and other dignitaries.
The Prize was awarded in recognition of His Majesty the Fourth King’s visionary leadership and the contribution to environmental conservation made by His Majesty the Fourth King’s development philosophy of Gross National Happiness which has found scientific recognition and wider adoption in the world.
During the Prize Acceptance Speech, Her Royal Highness said that His Majesty has decided to accept the Prize not because of His contribution to solving environmental problems nor for the credit given to him as the author of GNH but because it is a befitting tribute to Bhutan’s commitment and the sacrifices and unstinted support of the Bhutanese people to preserve ecological balance.
The Blue Planet Prize was established by the Asahi Glass Foundation in 1992 coinciding with the Earth Summit.
The Prize is awarded to two individuals or organizations every year from around the world in recognition of outstanding achievements in scientific research and its application that provide solutions to global environmental problems.
Professor Stephen Carpenter of the University of Wisconsin is the other 2022 Prize recipient for his research on lake ecosystems for more than four decades.
His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Akishino along with Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio and other well-wishers offered their congratulations to His Majesty the Fourth King for being awarded the 31st Blue Planet Prize.

Trongsa Dzong, also known as Chhoekhor Raptentse Dzong – Choetse Dzong in short – is one of the largest and most spectacular dzongs strategically placed in the middle of the nation connecting the West with the East of Bhutan. First established in 1543, the fortress is renowned for its intricate construction. Located overlooking Mangdechhu River, Trongsa Dzong was once the seat of power for the Wangchuck dynasty before official monarchy. Trongsa Dzong is a prime example of traditional Bhutanese architecture. It has a maze of corridors and many temples within the structure.

His Excellency (Dr.) Tandi Dorji, Hon’ble Minister for Foreign Affairs, led a seven-member delegation to New York to attend the High-level Week of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly from 17th - 28th September 2022. Bhutan’s delegation was supplemented by the Permanent Representative of Bhutan to the UN, and officers of the Permanent Mission. The session marked the first time in three years since the start of the pandemic that High-level Week was conducted entirely in person.

In addition to the General Debate, Hon’ble Lyonpo participated in mandated meetings of the General Assembly, a series of intergovernmental parallel meetings, high level side events, and several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Lyonpo met with the UN Secretary General H.E. Mr. António Guterres on 26th September 2022. He also conducted meetings with other senior members of the UN’s leadership. Lyonpo attended a number of social engagements, international media interviews, and met with Bhutanese nationals working in the UN System, and members of the Bhutanese community both in New York and Washington DC.

Key themes addressed during the visit included Bhutan’s commitment to multilateralism, contributions to the maintenance of international peace and security through peacekeeping, combating climate change, fragility of the mountain ecosystems, and affirmation of Bhutan’s LDC graduation time frame. Lyonpo highlighted the transformative developments underway in Bhutan including the launch of the reopening of international tourism under a rebooted policy on 23 September 2022.
