This New York Times piece on the recent success of Democratic Socialist candidates highlights two excellent Assembly primary winners who also earned our endorsement, Adam Bojak and Maurice Brown. DSA has really embraced progressive transportation policies.

They won Democratic state legislative primaries in Buffalo and Syracuse, showing how the party’s messaging and ground game can work outside New York City.

One More Time for the People in the Back: Safer Streets and Better Transit Aren't Just Good Policy, They're Good Politics!

When the early returns on Tuesday's primary election started coming in shortly after the polls closed, we posted to our Bluesky account that it was shaping up as a big night for Zohran Mamdani and NYC-DSA. That was accurate, as candidates endorsed by New York City's Mayor won every one of their races, and Democratic Socialist candidates nearly did the same. But it was also not quite the full story.

That's because as returns rolled in, the candidates we endorsed also had an outstanding night. While we didn't win every race, 20 of our 28 endorsees won their elections outright on Tuesday, and two others are leading in contests that remain too close to call, but look very promising. It's further validation of a point we've been making for a long time: safer streets and better public transit aren't just good policy – they're good politics.

The New York State Assembly has just one more day to pass A4523, a bill that will allow DSNY to install cameras on street sweepers to enforce alternate-side parking rules. 500,000 drivers fail to move their cars for sweepers every week, leading to unnecessarily filthy streets, and even worse, clogged catch basins that can exacerbate flooding. Please contact your Assemblymember today and urge them to support A4523, and call Speaker Carl Heastie at 518-455-3791 and ask him to move this important legislation.

Natasha Saada and her two young daughters are just three examples of people who would be alive today if Super Speeders like Miriam Yarimi were compelled to install ISA devices in their cars. What more does Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie need to include this life-saving bill in the state budget?
