19 PRICINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL HISTORY
The 19th Precinct Community Council started meeting in the staff lounge at Channel 5 in 1973, and was run by the news commentator. Due to its growth it eventually moved to the Channel's theater. After the theater was dismantled the group moved to the library at Wagner Junior High School at 76th Street for several years. Then In 1982 it started holding the monthly meetings at Hunter School of Social Work auditorium on 79th and Lexington. Before the electronic age the Council was more social. It had a softball team, where our star player was the CBS News anchor, Jim Jensen. Games were held in a ball field under the 59th Street Bridge, with great parties afterwards. The council would later move briefly to the dreary and depressing 19th Century Precinct walk-up building, once included in the Frank Sinatra movie, the Man with the Golden Arm. In 1985 it was scheduled to be renovated and, to include an elevator. During the 6 years of renovation, the precinct was located in a one story building up at 312 East 94th Street, until finally in August of 1991, moved back to its present modernized site. A founding member of the Council still serves on the Board.
