Amnesty International at NYU

Amnesty International at NYU General Meetings: Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m. Message us if you are interested in joining! We usually act on one urgent action a week.

We at AI @ NYU use several methods to work for human rights:

The most frequent actions we take are the urgent actions sent to us by Amnesty headquarters. Urgent actions are usually letter-writing campaigns directed at freeing prisoners of conscience, granting them fair trials, and ensuring that they are not subjected to torture. If government officials receive a multitude of letters requestin

g that a prisoner be treated fairly, they will usually comply. Hundreds of letters were sent on behalf of an adopted prisoner detained for many years in Soviet psychiatric hospitals. Later he said that his release had been a direct result of the letters from Amnesty. He believes they were also the key to better treatment during imprisonment. It may seem unbelievable but, through letter-writing campaigns, Amnesty members can give direct and effective assistance to prisoners of conscience. Since it was founded in 1961, Amnesty International has worked on behalf of more than 43,000 prisoner cases, of which 40,000 are now closed. In addition, many urgent actions address broader topics concerning human rights, in which case the letters are frequently addressed to officials who are responsible for committing the human rights abuses or for stopping them. In the past, the members of Amnesty International @ NYU have collected signatures for petitions, and have organized rallies, vigils, and other publicity events. We are always receptive to suggestions for new activities that constructively work toward the universal application of human rights.

Amnesty International at NYU attended the annual Northeast Regional Conference 2019 in Rhode Island! It was really fun connecting with local groups and learn about the actions that Amnesty International is currently taking! The conference ends with everyone lighting a candle and reading one of the articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Thank you everyone for coming to our event last night with the New York Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (CAIC).

We want to thank Daniel Egipciaco for sharing his personal experiences with solitary confinement and the prison reform activism, and Victor for giving us an amazing opportunity to experience being in solitary confinement through virtual reality (VR).

On Jan 21, 2020, (http://nycaic.org) will be at New York State capital to demand the humane alternatives to long term (HALT) solitary confinement act. More info can be found here: bit.ly/HALTsolitaryJan21

Yesterday, three of our e-board members went to the Amnesty International conference at Barnard, where they met with other NYC-area activists and Amnesty chapters, and heard an amazing speech on the HIV/AIDS crisis in Iran from a formerly imprisoned human rights defender. Thank you to Barnard for hosting such a great event! If you are interested in other opportunities like this, make sure to like our page to stay updated!
