Reading as fun and leisure or a sincere desire for reading seems to be an ancient pursuit, if not lost completely, among high school students today. The lack of love for reading stems from our current social constraints. For middle to high school students, strict curriculums prohibit book selection freedom and confuses authoritative assignments with reading, leading students to “hate” reading. For
adults, it could be the perception that there is a lack of time, or don’t know where to start. MENTU strives to bring back the love of reading to everyone. Our students, through MENTU, have regained their desire and discovered that reading truly empowers them. Hence, we “read to win.”
We seek to pair students, or mentees, with professional and personable mentors, determined by the student's specific interests, hobbies, curiosities, and career paths, to ultimately reinforce a passion for reading. Through a period of initial interviews, MENTU understands the personalities, strengths and weaknesses of our mentees, and then finds the right mentor for that specific mentee. The selected mentor motivates the mentee to read and in turn, to succeed. Mentors at MENTU are able to select suitable books for their students, as well as books that the mentors themselves want to explore. We have researched a large selection of books in our ongoing database. We also respect what mentors are in high desire for in terms of the types of knowledge and fun that they want to acquire. Our mission is to foster a personalized mentor plan and reading schedule for all. We approach each student by understanding their individual academic and personal interests. We provide them with suitable books and guide them in advancing their reading comprehension, oral expression, and critical thinking skills.
