Narissa Ganpat is beginning a great career in the legal field. The York Early College Academy graduate earned a Political Science degree from York College / CUNY and Narissa currently attends Hofstra University School of Law. Her most recent accomplishments include being named a 2021 NYC Bar Diversity Fellow and a 2021 Don H. Liu Scholar from the Asian American Bar Association. She shares this message about her accomplishment.

“I am extremely grateful to have been selected for the New York City Bar Diversity Fellowship. This achievement is an affirmation of my hard work during my first semester at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. The Office of Career Services and prior Fellows have been a tremendous support system during this competitive selection process. I am excited to start work this summer at Perkins Coie LLP where I will have the opportunity to explore my interest in Corporate law and work alongside talented individuals in the legal industry. I look forward to sharing my experiences and successes to demonstrate to other first generation law students that it is possible to rise above the socioeconomic challenges and adversities we face as diverse students.”

HERO High School Principal, Kristin Cahill, shares her appreciation for school staff and teachers.

"...We can’t lose sight of our greatest asset: educators and school staff members who have shown their willingness to go above and beyond for students.

This was made particularly clear for me the day after the Capitol riot. In one virtual classroom, I watched a third-year teacher display a carefully curated selection of images of the events of the previous day. He asked students to respond in writing and then share their thoughts and feelings. He built on their comments to explain key concepts and make connections to the theme of the class, the history of colonialism. With perfect timing, his co-teachers stepped in to ask probing questions, offer their own perspectives, and suggest transitions in a way that kept the discussion honest, but not hopeless. It was clear the lesson plan was the result of a whole season of hard work, not just one night."

Kristin Cahill is the founding principal of HERO High School, a P-Tech school on the Samuel Gompers Campus partnered with Hostos Community College and Montefiore Medical Center. A native New Yorker, she began her career as a teacher in Oakland, California. Cahill worked in school support, workforce, and research before opening her school in 2013.

Back on campus, it’s impossible not to feel grateful — and hopeful.

“Today at noon, our country demonstrates the strength of its ideals even in the most tumultuous and perilous times. On this unusually consequential Inauguration Day, The City University of New York welcomes the new administration of President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Vice President Kamala Harris, and their promise of leadership committed to social justice, public education, and leading the nation out of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. Our new President is himself a graduate of public higher education. Our new Vice President today breaks barriers of gender and race and is the first graduate of an Historically Black University to take the oath of national elective office. And our First Lady is a lifelong educator who for nearly three decades has taught in community colleges and plans to continue doing so while in the White House. We look ahead to a new day of equality, justice and peace for our country.”
