had the pleasure of hosting “Taiwan's Strategic Outlook and the Future of U.S.-Taiwan Relations” with Foreign Policy Research Institute, welcoming several distinguished guests, including former AIT Chairman Ambassador Raymond Burghardt, as well as participants from the media, diplomatic, think tank, academic, and business sectors. Ms. Shihoko Goto, Vice President of Programs and Director of the Asia Program at FPRI, served as the moderator. Mr. Chris Estep of FPRI, Mr. Rupert Hammond-Chambers of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council, and Professor Vincent Wei-cheng Wang of FPRI served as panelists.
In his opening remarks, TECONY Ambassador Tom Chih-chiang Lee noted that 2026 is not only the year of the U.S. Semiquincentennial, but also marks the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election. Taiwan and the US have shared common values such as democracy and liberty for decades, and Taiwan has now become the US’ fourth-largest trading partner. As global technology supply chains continue to be reconfigured, Taiwan and the US have deepened their partnerships in key fields such as semiconductors, forming a strategic economic framework that serves as one of the many successful examples of Taiwan-U.S. collaboration.
FPRI President Aaron Stein also delivered remarks, emphasizing that Taiwan sits at the intersection of several critical global issues, including great-power competition, the race for advanced technologies, and the ongoing reassessment of the international order. With this in mind, it is essential to discuss Taiwan-related issues and explore ways to strengthen cooperation between Taiwan and the US.
During the panel discussion, Professor Wang noted that Taiwan still faces many challenges amid complicated geopolitical dynamics, while Mr. Estep stated that raising the costs of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is key to deterring China's ambitions. Mr. Hammond-Chambers expressed that Taiwan’s advanced technology sector will help deepen Taiwan’s partnership with the United States.
Thank you to all of our guests who enthusiastically participated in the post-panel Q&A session, demonstrating a strong interest in understanding the Taiwan-U.S. relationship and Taiwan’s future. We also thank our moderator and panelists for their insightful contributions. The session will be uploaded to TECONY’s YouTube channel soon, so stay tuned!
Taiwan in New York
