This July 4, step back into Revolutionary-era New York at Historic Richmond Town as America celebrates its 250th anniversary.

Experience a full day of patriotic festivities across New York City’s living history village, including Revolutionary War encampments, costumed interpreters, blacksmithing and hearth cooking demonstrations, patriotic music, historic trades, and a live reading of the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the 3rd County Courthouse.

Explore historic homes and workshops, witness historical demonstrations throughout the village, and celebrate Independence Day in a way you can’t experience anywhere else in NYC.

Books, and ballots, and buttons, oh my! Our new exhibition, Founding Principles, will feature objects from Historic Richmond Town's collection related to governance, voting, and local politics. The oldest object on display will be a book recording the meetings of local government on Staten Island from 1767 through 1804. Also, featured will be a sash representing the Staten Island Woman Suffrage Party, which advocated for women's voting rights in the 1910s. Here's a sneak peek.

The New Dorp Railroad Station was built by New York real estate developers Hughes and Ross in 1889 and operated by the Staten Island Rapid Transit Railroad Company. It is believed to have been designed by New York City architect Henry Knapp, based on style similarities to Knapp-designed residences in New Dorp. When Staten Island's grade crossing elimination project endangered the building in the 1960s, it was moved to Historic Richmond Town to prevent its destruction.

New Dorp (which means "new town" in Dutch) was settled about 1671, making it about ten years "newer" than Oude Dorp (or Old Town). The railroad station, Historic Richmond Town's Britton Cottage and Guyon-Lake-Tysen House also came from this area. New Dorp's location near the intersection of Amboy and Richmond Roads made it an early hub and the site of several early American taverns. Notable early residents included the Vanderbilts, who had a farm on New Dorp Lane at a site now known as Miller Field.

We caught up with Founding Principles exhibit advisor Christopher Franz in the historical museum and got his take on the United States' founding principles, as they are defined in the Declaration of Independence. Referencing Bejamin Franklin's famous remark that our government is, "a republic, if you can keep it," Mr. Franz concluded "It is only by educating ourselves, that we can keep that republic."

Each May, Staten Island’s annual Soap Box Derby takes place at the Michael J. Petrides School complex. Winners go on to compete in the World Championships in Akron, Ohio. In honor of this tradition, this May’s object of the month is a soap box derby car from Historic Richmond Town’s Collection. This racer belonged to Staten Islander William Dubovsky, who competed in the derby from 1961 to 1965. He and his father built the racer, named Zephyr, using wood, cardboard and tape for the body, a seat re-used from a dining chair, and brakes, axles, and steering wheel from Island Chevrolet.

Last week, we were honored to welcome Deputy Speaker and Chair of Cultural Affairs Nantasha Williams Councilmember Nantasha Williams and her staff to Historic Richmond Town as part of her tour of Staten Island cultural institutions. We appreciated the opportunity to highlight the important role Historic Richmond Town plays in preserving and celebrating Staten Island’s heritage.

We also extend our gratitude to the Staten Island Delegation, Minority Whip, Council Member David Carr Minority Leader David Carr , Majority Whip, Council Member Kamilah Hanks Kamillah Hanks Council Member-D49 , and Council Member Frank Morano Frank Morano , for their presence on the tour and continued partnership and support of the arts, culture, and historic preservation across our borough.

We’re beyond thankful to the Troop 88 Boy Scouts for giving our fence along PS 28 and the parking lot a fresh new look!

Lori Weintrob, Heather Butts and Lina Montoya about their new project "Staten Island By Name: Mapping Untold Stories of our Streets" and gain a new perspective on our borough showcasing our shared and diverse past through street names (and co-names), as well as names of parks, fields, schools, businesses and buildings.

About the presenters:

Lori R. Weintrob is Professor of History and founding director of the Holocaust Center, at Wagner College. She received her B.A. from Princeton University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Heather M. Butts is an Associate Professor at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and is the co-founder or H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths, Inc. She received her B.A. from Princeton University, J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law, M.A. Public health from Harvard University.

Lina Montoya, “Ele Eme”, is a Graphic Designer, Muralist and Arts Educator, originally from Colombia. Staten-Island based, Montoya has been developing her career as Public Artist and Community Organizer for more than a decade, leading community-based projects around NYC.

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, join us for a special discussion and interactive workshop exploring Filipino culture and script writing. Baybayin is an ancient script that was used widely in the 14th to 19th centuries in the Philippines, before Spanish colonization. This cultural expression is currently experiencing a revival led by artists and scholars including Mark Libatique, who will lead this workshop in the 3rd County Courthouse. All materials provided, no experience necessary. Recommended for participants 12 and up.
