When Lupita was diagnosed with leukemia, treatment kept her from celebrating an important milestone: her quinceañera.

When she was referred to Make-A-Wish®, she knew she wanted a chance to enjoy the quinceañera she had missed out on during treatment. For Lupita, the quinceañera was more than a party. It was a celebration of family, culture and tradition.

Dressed in a pink ballgown and tiara, Lupita entered her party smiling from ear to ear. She spent the evening dancing with loved ones, enjoying her favorite foods and celebrating alongside her community.

"You could see she felt like a princess," said her mom, Yolanda.

As we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, we're celebrating wish stories like Lupita's that honor the traditions, cultures and communities that help shape who we are.

When 14-year-old Rayden underwent a bone marrow transplant, playing video games became an important outlet for him during the long recovery. 🎮

Whether he was exploring new worlds or teaming up with friends online, gaming helped take his mind off the pain and uncertainty he was feeling and gave him moments of joy and a way to connect with friends when he needed them most.

So, when he was referred to Make-A-Wish®, Rayden knew exactly what he wanted: a gaming room of his very own.

Today, his gaming room is a place where he can relax, make memories with friends and simply enjoy being a teenager again.

"After having my wish granted, it felt like I was finally free from being hospitalized all the time and I can just have fun and be normal again," Rayden shared.

When it came time for Liza to choose her wish, her grandparents were the inspiration. 🌴🌊🌺

After hearing about their winters spent on Hawaii’s sunny beaches, Liza knew she wanted to experience it for herself. While going through cancer treatment, that thought—and the wish that would take her there — helped her keep going.

With her family by her side, she snorkeled in the ocean, saw sea turtles and whales, and loved the music and dancing of a luau. Most importantly, she celebrated being cancer-free with the people she loves most.

25 years ago today, the world changed forever. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and NYPD faced the largest rescue operation in history, and in just 2 hours, they managed to save 20,000 lives. They rushed toward danger, putting the lives of strangers above their own. Wish kid Jake was inspired by their resilience.

While in the hospital with leukemia, Jake watched a 9/11 documentary and was moved by the strength of the first responders. "When I watched that, it gave me the strength to keep going and stay positive during my treatment." – Jake.

15 years ago, his wish to meet the FDNY Chief was granted, sparking his interest in becoming a firefighter himself. Today, we honor the memory of those we lost, recognize the courage of survivors, and extend our deepest gratitude to the first responders whose bravery still inspires us and our wish kids. 💙

When your days are full of hospital visits, scans, and treatment, it can be easy to lose sight of everything else that life has to offer. For pediatric cancer survivor and wish alum Briana, a wish was a chance to focus on something more than her diagnosis, and see a part of the world she had yet to explore. ✈️

After completing treatment, Briana’s wish was granted. She wished to visit South Korea, where Taekwondo, a passion of hers, originated. Now, Briana is beginning her sophomore year of college studying to become a Child Life Specialist and teaching at her dad’s Taekwondo studio.

“Through my diagnosis, treatment, surgery and maintenance, there was always the hope that good would come after the bad,” Briana said. “Being given an opportunity to wish—a wish that was all mine to choose—sparked that first sense of hope in my journey. The creative freedom was like a sign: ‘Yes, you will gain control of life again.’”

Briana’s wish helped remind her she is so much more than a diagnosis—she is a daughter, a friend, a student, a taekwondo practitioner, and more, with a bright future ahead of her.

They call wish kid Anthony the “mayor” of his school – because everyone knows him. So, when it came time to choose his wish, he wanted to give an accessible playground to his school for the blind. When it opened, his first words were simple: “Let’s play.” 💙

“Watching the kids from kindergarten through high school enjoy the playground is more than worth it. These kids deserve the world, happiness and joy, and I can’t wait for all the memories they are going to make on this playground. All the kids asked, are we going to come back tomorrow?” – Cierra, Anthony’s mom

Wishes can often be life-changing for children facing critical illnesses – bringing hope, joy and strength when they need it most. Especially when a wish leads them to an unforgettable destination, it can bring a child some much-needed celebration and time with family. 🌎

After facing leukemia, Lilly’s wish brought her and her family to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where days were spent snorkeling, exploring and soaking in every moment together. More than a getaway, it was a time to reconnect, celebrate Lilly’s courage and make memories that will last a lifetime. 🌊🌴

In the fight against childhood critical illness, it's not only the child that suffers. The entire family faces isolation, hospital stays, separation from each other, and traumatic stress. But a wish can give them a little light back. It can give them time to heal, bond, and simply have fun again as a family. In fact, 94% of wish parents said their wish actually improved their family’s well-being, and ​93% of wish alumni agreed.
