Deputy Consul General Katie Daughen was honoured to participate in the 250th commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn at the Old Stone House on Saturday.

The Battle of Brooklyn was the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War and was a pivotal moment in America’s struggle for independence. Many Irish-born and Irish-American soldiers fought in the battle including members of the Maryland 400 - soldiers of the 1st Maryland Regiment whose sacrifice during the battle secured the Continental Army's successful retreat and survival - who were remembered at the event.

Eight years after being told he had just a 5% chance of ever walking again, Galway’s Fergus Farrell has just begun a 3,000-mile journey across the United States.

From the Brooklyn Bridge to the Santa Monica Pier, Fergus is taking on his biggest challenge yet to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries and demonstrate what can be achieved through resilience, determination and community support.

Supported by Spinal Injuries Ireland and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, the challenge could see Fergus become the first person with a spinal cord injury to complete such a walk across America and the first Irish person to do so in more than a century.
