Our Director of Research and Data, Dr. Shana Hardin, recently attended the Politics of Race, Immigration, and Ethnicity Consortium (PRIEC) at Rice University. The workshop brought together scholars to share research on political socialization, race and public opinion, migration, and immigrant incorporation. A highlight was hearing Dr. Roberto Carlos discuss his new book, Information Brokers: Political Socialization in Latino Immigrant Families.

Thank you to everyone who believed in this campaign and stepped up to volunteer, donate, and vote. You made this journey the experience of a lifetime.

I want to congratulate Luke Bronin on a win that exceeded my expectations. It is no small feat to win a four-way primary against a 14-term incumbent and earn a majority of the votes.

Yesterday’s election results were very disappointing for me. I spent 14 months working toward the singular goal of winning the Democratic primary on August 11. I don’t want to sugarcoat it—I lost the election; and I’m fine. If anything, losing reminds me of my privilege. Most people don’t have the space to fail and keep their integrity, their freedom, their job, their relationships, or their lifestyle.

It’s the first time in my life that I’ve completely missed the mark after setting a goal and working really hard at it. It’s also the first time that success did not fully depend on me and how hard I worked, but on the collective actions of tens of thousands of people. I did everything within my control and fell short.

I’m reminded of the quote that most people fail because they aim low and hit, not because they aim high and miss. I did aim high. And I think more of us need to do that. If we want a country where everyone can build a good life, we’ll need to aim high.

Even though I lost the election, I gained so much from the journey. My marriage and many of my closest friendships grew stronger over the past year. Being a candidate has been sort of like a tax on the people I love most. They wholeheartedly paid the tax and somehow made a demanding campaign an enriching journey. I’ll be forever grateful for that.

This campaign is over, but the work continues. Let’s each do as much as we can and always aim high.

Dear friends, family, neighbors, and supporters,

Unfortunately, tonight's results were not what we had hoped for. I want to congratulate Rep. Jason Hoskins for his win and Dr. Rakesh Ramakrishnan for his well-fought campaign.

When I was growing up under the Hafez al-Assad dictatorship in Syria, I was warned to never, ever talk about politics. "The walls have ears" is a phrase every Syrian heard growing up, myself included.

How could I not take those words seriously? As just a young girl, I was woken up in the middle of the night by secret police armed with Kalashnikovs rummaging through my shelves for banned books. I witnessed a government massacre of peaceful protesters right in front of my home — the bullets lodged themselves in our shutters. Men in my neighborhood would constantly end up missing, never to be heard from again.

The fear of politics never left me, even when I fled Syria for the freedom of the United States and began my family in Michigan, right here in State Senate District 7. I stayed as far away from politics as possible.

Then, in 2011, the Syrian Revolution began. The people of Syria were sick and tired of the suffocation of tyrannical dictatorship. They faced machine guns, barrel bombs, and chemical weapons in their demands for freedom. Then, the unimaginable happened. An Assad regime tank fired on my elderly parents' home while they were still inside, just inches away from taking their lives instantly.

I knew I could no longer sit by in silence. I lobbied both Republicans and Democrats in Washington to pass critical human rights legislation targeting the Assad regime. That legislation, which crippled the Assad regime's coffers, eventually contributed to the collapse of the dictatorship that had silenced me for decades.

The election of Donald Trump and the far-right turn of the Republican Party shook me to my core, especially when I saw the eerie signs of authoritarianism that I knew so well emerging. I turned my advocacy back toward my community here in Oakland County to fight back against Trump's Republican Party and protect our fundamental rights and freedoms.

This brings us to today. Although our campaign was not successful, I am deeply thankful for the broad coalition of supporters who have supported our run from start to finish.

My work is not over. I will continue to support Democrats up and down the ballot in the upcoming critical general election. Beyond November, I'll continue to be out in our community fighting back against the GOP and advocating for what's right.
