“Imagine. Believe. Create. Become.”

For more than 30 years, Art Start has supported over 25,000 young people with the help of 12,000 artist educators and volunteers, building a nationally recognized model for transforming lives through the arts. Art Start uses the creative process to nurture the voices, hearts, and minds of youth from communities that have been historically under-resourced.

Through creative workshops, mentorship, and youth-led multimedia projects, Art Start supports young people as they imagine new possibilities for themselves and their communities. Working alongside public schools, youth organizations, alternative sentencing programs, and residences for those experiencing homelessness, they create safe spaces where artistic expression becomes a pathway for personal growth, critical thinking, and healing.

In this article, Playbill, in partnership with Inspired, is highlighting how Opening Act, is transforming the lives of young people across New York City through free, student-centered theatre programs.

For over 25 years, Opening Act has supported students as creators, using improvisation and devised theatre to amplify their voices and build confidence, collaboration, and leadership skills.

Beyond performances, the program fosters supportive communities where students feel seen and heard, culminating in initiatives like the new Youth Company and its debut production, GORGONE. Opening Act creates spaces where young people can take creative risks, grow into their identities as storytellers, and envision expansive futures shaped by their own voices.

We are proud to see Opening Act, a Youth INC Nonprofit Partner, recognized for this work.
