Since our founding as a 501c3 in 1995, we’ve taken a uniquely holistic approach to address the many different needs of nonprofits, from improving fundraising practices and building boards, to funding critical elements of infrastructure. By applying the best practices from the corporate and nonprofit sectors, we empower our partner nonprofits with the tools to achieve sustainable growth. We currently partner with more than seventy-five youth-serving nonprofits that work with over 300,000 NYC youth each year. We would love to introduce you to our nonprofit partners.

We’ve improved programs. Now we have to build the organizations behind them.
For years, the youth development sector has focused on making programs stronger, improving quality, expanding access, strengthening outcomes, and responding to what young people and communities need whether or not they have the resources to maintain them. The next chapter of youth development needs to prioritize building support systems that make that work possible.

This summer, Youth INC Senior Director of Programs Marc Fernandes joined Allie Lidie of New York State Network for Youth Success and Todd Waite of Farash Foundation, along with several other leaders from across the country at the Johnson Foundation at Wingspread in Racine, Wisconsin, for the National AfterSchool Association’s Convening on Advancing System-Level Job Quality in Out-of-School Time.

The convening brought together leaders and cross-sector partners to explore how stronger approaches to job quality can strengthen the OST workforce and create lasting, system-level change.

Marc and fellow leaders engaged in peer learning, shared problem-solving, and strategic conversations focused on aligning workforce strategies, strengthening leadership, and translating promising ideas into action.

Please join us in welcoming Susan Hanley, Youth INC’s new Director, Individual Giving and Corporate Partnerships! 🎉

Susan brings a unique blend of marketing, fundraising, development, and nonprofit experience to Youth INC. Her career spans advertising, philanthropy, public media, arts, and nonprofit advancement, including roles with the Charles A. Dana Foundation, PBS, GMMB’s AARP account, Bay Street Theater, Project MOST, and WLIW.

Most recently, Susan served as Director of Advancement at Newport Art Museum, where she strengthened individual giving and corporate sponsorship programs. At Youth INC, she’ll bring her relationship-building expertise to growing the partnerships and philanthropic support that help make our work possible.

Outside of work, Susan is an avid tennis player, a NYS-licensed real estate salesperson and paralegal, and the author of the forthcoming children’s book Frisky Meditates.

To advance the reach of youth development, leaders need to move from intention towards impact by examining practices. At its strongest, this work rests on interconnected premises:

Being strengths-based, not deficit-based, seeing young people for their agency and potential, which depends on a belief in their capacity.

Recognizing that relationships are the work. Young people show up because of the people, not the programming.

Prioritizing youth as active partners, including them in decision-making, designing, building, and evaluating the systems meant to serve them.

A commitment to adult, organizational, and community change. If young people are expected to grow, adults and institutions must be willing to do the same.

A belief that this work belongs to everyone. Youth development extends into homes, neighborhoods, and everyday interactions. The responsibility is collective.

And culturally responsive engagement, building environments that reflect, honor, and sustain who they already are instead of asking young people to fit into existing systems,

When fully practiced and supported by the conditions needed to sustain them every day, these principles create real impact.
