New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)

New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) NYCHA is the largest public housing authority in North America and is home to 1 in 16 New Yorkers.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the largest public housing authority in North America, was created in 1935 to provide decent, affordable housing for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers. NYCHA is home to roughly 1 in 15 New Yorkers across over 177,000 apartments within 335 housing developments. NYCHA serves over 350,000 residents through the conventional public housing program (Sectio

n 9), over 20,000 residents at developments that have been converted to PACT/RAD, and over 75,000 families through federal rent subsidies (the Section 8 Leased Housing Program). In addition, NYCHA connects residents to opportunities in financial empowerment, business development, career advancement, and educational programs. With a housing stock that spans all five boroughs, NYCHA is a city within a city. Read the City of New York's social media policy: http://www.nyc.gov/socialmediapolicy

🎨 Honoring history at NYCHA’s Kingsborough Houses

A restored historic frieze has received a 2026 Municipal Art Society MASterworks Design Award for Best Public Art Restoration.

“Exodus and Dance,” an 80+ year-old work by Harlem Renaissance artist Richmond Barthé, has been brought back to life through years of advocacy, collaboration, and community engagement.

The restoration preserves a powerful story of migration, liberation, and cultural expression—while reflecting the voices and pride of who helped shape the project.

👏 Congratulations to all who made this preservation effort possible.

🏡 NYCHA recently celebrated the completion of Linden Grove Senior Residences in Bushwick, Brooklyn—a 153-unit, 100% community built on NYCHA land.

“At Linden Grove, we are witnessing the result of using innovative solutions to address housing challenges through beautiful design and environmental stewardship,” said NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt. “This building will provide dozens of NYCHA residents with the opportunity to age in place within a senior-only community, complete with wellness programs and supportive amenities.”

This new development expands access to safe, modern housing and supports residents in aging with dignity in their community.

Thank you to our partners: Gilbane Development, ASA, Blue Sea Development, NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD), New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, NYC Housing Development Corporation, and our local and state partners for making this possible.
