March is Women’s History Month. This is a time to celebrate and uplift women’s progress toward equality while also recognizing the rampant misogyny throughout places of all types of employment and everyday life in the United States.

The theme for 2026 is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” which recognizes that sustainability reaches further than environmental concerns, touching on such matters as financial sustainability, building community, and fostering equity. These issues impact all of society, including the need to develop green technologies, to advance economic justice, strengthen education systems, and build civic power. This theme affirms that shaping a sustainable future means building systems that support both people and the planet we call home.

February is Black History Month!

February 2026 marks 100 years of national observances dedicated to honoring the lives, struggles, and achievements of African Americans, a celebration initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Accordingly, the 2026 Black History Month theme is “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” honoring this 100th anniversary of observance.

Civil legal services are essential infrastructure in New York. They help people stay housed, access benefits, protect family stability, and assert their rights. Today’s Queens Daily Eagle: https://tinyurl.com/37zhtahe front-page story highlights a growing concern: the Executive Budget does not fully fund the IOLA Fund, a critical, non-taxpayer source of support for civil legal services. Without the additional $25 million requested, providers will face significant cuts in the second year of existing contracts, despite rising need across the state.

Honoring the Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, Monday, January 19, we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This day is the only national holiday honoring a Black American. Dr. King’s legacy of civil rights and nonviolent resistance serves as a National Day of Service to build community and promote justice: “a day on, not a day off.” It is a time to reflect on, rejoice in, and recommit to honor the enduring legacy of Dr. King and the transformative power of his vision. It is also a time to remember that even in the darkest times, the seeds of justice are being sown by the actions of millions of people uniting for a future of harmony, love and goodwill.

Nonprofits keep millions of New Yorkers housed, fed, safe, and supported – yet New York State routinely fails to pay nonprofits on time for the services it contracts us to deliver. In an op-ed in the New York Daily News, New York Legal Service Coalition’s President Kristin Brown outlines how chronic contracting delays and sudden reversals destabilize organizations and put essential services at risk.
Last year, the Legislature, led by Assemblymember Amy Paulin and Senator Shelley Mayer unanimously passed legislation to fix this broken system, but Governor Kathy Hochul vetoed the bill, promising to address the problem administratively. With federal cuts looming and two-thirds of nonprofits fearing they cannot fund basic operations next year, that promise must now be backed by action. We are looking to the Governor to deliver real, workable solutions in the State of the State – because nonprofits, and the New Yorkers they serve, cannot wait.

In response to a landmark settlement, MFJ Senior Staff Attorney Daniel Ross said he is “pleased that the state now makes it clear that assisted living facilities cannot discriminate” against prospective residents and residents with mobility impairments. Such individuals, he added, “should not be pushed into more restrictive settings like nursing homes simply because they use mobility devices.”

Assisted living providers in New York cannot refuse residency based on mobility limitations, clarifies an agreement announced last week that settles a 2018 lawsuit filed by the New York-based Fair Housing Justice Center.
