Chipotle founder and former CEO Steve Ells will be the keynote speaker at Baruch College’s 2026 Commencement, addressing more than 20,000 attendees—including over 5,500 members of the Class of 2026 on Monday, June 1 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Ells will also be awarded the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters recognizing his transformational impact on the global food industry, commitment to innovation and ethical business practices, and ability to inspire future generations of leaders values that embody the historical and continuing mission of Baruch College and The City University of New York.

Ells built Chipotle Mexican Grill into a $40 billion company and created an entirely new restaurant category. As the company’s founder, he turned a single burrito shop into a global brand and invented the fast-casual dining model along the way. He proved that fast food could be made with real ingredients and actual cooking technique—a radical idea in 1993.

When Baruch College Zicklin School of Business alumna Jai Kiah (BBA ’25) graduated last spring, she never imagined her next chapter would lead to entrepreneurship in the culinary world. Originally a Computer Information Systems (CIS) major, Jai has since turned her passion for food into a growing business: Taste City.

Alongside its affiliate, Karri & Co. Bakery—named after her three-year-old son—Jai’s home-based venture offers a menu full of comfort food favorites, including chicken Alfredo, mac & cheese, peach cobbler, hibachi-grilled shrimp, and what many call “Harlem’s best” cheesecake. Signature drinks like Lemon Blvd. and Sugar Hill Tea add even more flavor to the experience.

At a recent Lawrence N. Field Center event celebrating Baruch entrepreneurs, Jai showcased her business by sharing samples of her flavored shortcakes and cheesecakes while connecting with attendees and speaking with Zicklin News.

From CIS student to culinary entrepreneur, Jai’s journey is a reminder that success can come from unexpected paths.

Baruch College has named Baruch College Zicklin School of Business student Farah Haq (BBA, '26) and Baruch College Weissman School of Arts and Sciences student Kylie Jones, respectively, as the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Class of 2026. 👏 🎓

Valedictorian Farah Haq is graduating as a Provost Scholar Honors student with a BBA in marketing and a minor in political science. As a Bengali immigrant and first-generation college student, Haq understood early on that access to legal and professional resources is not equally distributed and set out to change that.

Throughout her time at Baruch, she took on leadership roles centered on expanding access to professional, legal, and civic opportunities for students. Her involvement included co-president of the Pre-Law Society, the Honors Student Council, and publisher and social media manager for the Baruch Undergraduate Law Review, where she designed and launched its first full online publication. She also served as a Peer Coach at the Starr Career Development Center and received the Li-Auyeung Award through Peers for Careers in recognition of her contributions.

Two members of the Baruch College community— Baruch College Zicklin School of Business alumna Kia Glean (BBA ’25) and senior Mariam Moazzam (’26)—have been named 2026 Columbia School of Professional Studies (SPS) CUNY Fellows, a highly competitive honor that supports the pursuit of a master’s degree at Columbia University. 👏

Launched in 2024, the fellowship program was started with the goal of providing high-achieving recent City University of New York (CUNY) bachelor’s or master’s degree recipients access to Columbia’s academic, professional, and community resources. The fellowship provides a full-tuition scholarship for six semesters in any one of the School’s graduate programs, which helps remove a financial barrier to earning a master’s degree.
