How will you play the game of life?

At our Non-secure Detention Center, we use the present to imagine a better future — a future that includes gainful employment and stability.
In fact, our program participants have gone on to find work, most recently in construction and security.

Our center provides a setting that is supportive and home-like, yet closely supervised, for youth who have committed a criminal offense but are considered low risk.

In 2025, we served 710 youth, many during incredibly challenging times in their lives. Some residents have their own rooms and others live two to three in a room. For the most part, ages range from 12 to 17 years old.

The main goals for the youth we serve are twofold: avoid recidivism and involvement with the justice system and help facilitate future success.

Through individual and group sessions, our case managers talk with the residents about their plans for when they are released, about themselves, and about their families. We share resources and speak with their lawyers.

Says Rachel Bleecker, Executive Director for Residential Services, “This program is inarguably one of LSSNYs most important programs, serving incarcerated male youth and offering an alternative to incarceration in a home-like setting. Our goal is to help the youth placed at our program — who are disproportionately black and brown — to be heard, to feel understood, to heal, to return home, to course-correct and to hopefully avoid a life of poor decisions/negative outcomes.”

“Sundance”…”Honolulu blue”…”grape green”…

These are names of vibrant paint colors that will transform our Bergen Street residence. Here, we provide single-room apartments for formerly home-insecure individuals, along with supportive services and daily programming.

This colorful refresh is thanks to our partnership with Publicolor, an innovative educational and youth development organization.
Publicolor provides all the materials and obtains grants from local politicians and businesses such as Sherwin-Williams, which provides paint.

According to a cross-cultural study of indoor work environments by Kuller, Mikellides, & Janssens, “When color is transmitted through the human eye, the brain releases a hormone which affects our moods, mental clarity, and energy level.”

Research also shows that learning is fostered in an environment rich with stimulus rather than a drab palette or gray, beige, or white.

Publicolor partnered with us last summer to brighten up our St. John’s residences for formerly home-insecure individuals and families.

Check out the future color options for Bergen Street. We’ll update you as the renovation comes to life.

We are grateful for these welcome rays of sunshine!

We are a nation of immigrants.

Here are three stories from the frontlines of our Immigration Legal Program.

A 15-year-old from El Salvador fled violence caused by Salvadoran gangs. She undertook a dangerous journey to the United States to reunite with her family. We helped her secure Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, but due to a backlog, she had to wait five years before she was eligible to apply for permanent residency. During this wait, she was awarded SIJS Deferred Action, making her eligible to apply for work authorization. She currently awaits approval of her USCIS application and the arrival of her green card. This will bring her one step closer to obtaining US citizenship. She is excited for future stability and hopes to travel soon, without fear.

A 20-year-old accompanied his younger brother to our church clinic, only to realize that he, too, could qualify for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS). Due to turn 21 the following week, he had only a week to qualify. We prepared family court documents, filed with family court, and asked for the earliest possible court date. We appeared in court the next day, were granted special findings, and prepared and mailed the I-360 form overnight. It arrived the day before his 21st birthday. His case is pending with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and he is grateful that he was able to apply for this form of immigration relief before the deadline.

A year ago, we represented a Jamaican asylum seeker before Immigration Court, where he demonstrated that returning home would put his life in danger because of his sexual orientation. The client won his claim and secured employment and housing. After living in the United States for one year with asylum status, he is now eligible to apply for his permanent residency. Our Immigration Legal Program is working with him to collect documents, complete forms, and submit the application to adjust his status. Once he has his green card, he will be on the path to US citizenship, eligible to apply after four years.

Three clients; three success stories.
