On September 11th, we pause to remember the lives lost and to honor the first responders who ran toward danger when others needed them most. Twenty-five years later, that day still leaves its mark on our city, but so does what followed: New Yorkers showing up for one another with courage and compassion.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, and our message to every young person is simple: you are not alone, and support is closer than you think.

Su***de is the second-leading cause of death for Americans ages 10 to 34, and in 2023, one in five high schoolers seriously considered it.

Since 2024, with a grant from the New York State Office of Mental Health, The Child Center of NY has run a youth su***de prevention program across five schools and our Ocean Bay Cornerstone Community Center, reaching low-income communities in Corona, Flushing, the Rockaways, and Crown Heights.

Prevention is about more than crisis. It's about making sure kids feel seen, supported, and hopeful every day. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 for the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline, free and confidential, 24/7.

Some connections don't fade when the job ends. Gaby DeJesus-Infante worked in the Development Office at The Child Center of NY from 2017 to 2019, and years later she's still showing up, now through her team at Omnicom Health Market Access, which is supporting this year's Backpack Drive.

In her words: "Returning to support The Child Center of NY feels like coming full circle. My time in the Development Office showed me the lasting impact this organization has on children and families, and I'm grateful to continue giving back in a new way."
