Women of Color for Progress Our mission is to create an inclusive and transparent political system that empowers women of color to excel, lead, represent, and be heard.

The challenges that women of color face in achieving elective office are far more complex than of male candidates of color and white female candidates. Women of color are disadvantaged by not only facing initial skepticism of their credentials, racial stereotypes, but also by their intersection of race, gender and class. Historically, women of color have been underrepresented throughout national a

nd statewide executive elections resulting in perpetual silence and invisibility on national and local policy making. Research demonstrates that minority women in office not only uplift the voices and concerns of women of color, but also champion the interests of other underserved populations. Furthermore, women of color tend to utilize both a culturally and gender responsive lens in decision making which tends to have greater impact on public policy for all constituents. Unfortunately, the opportunities and pathways to becoming an elected official are not inclusive nor accessible to women of color. To this end, Women of Color for Progress (WCP) is a multi-strategy political organization founded by women of color for women of color. Through a racial equity and intersectional lens, WCP empowers women of color to excel, lead, represent, and be heard. WCP aims to create an inclusive and transparent political system that focuses on progressive human rights legislation. Ultimately, we hope to not only elect women of color into public office but also create a pipeline of women of color political leaders.

All Hands On Deck! Let’s Go Vote!

Today is another Primary Day in our continued fight to make our Democracy work for us. ✊🏾

We’ve seen the Supreme Court continue to erode our rights. While we’ve been calling for more tools to hold our institutions accountable, instead we’ve seen State legislatures all over the country surpress their constituents rights to vote and remove access to life saving healthcare.

Here in NY we have another opportunity to use our voices at the ballot box to protect protect reproductive rights, keep fighting affordable housing, and funding for our schools and communities in New York State. By re-electing dynamic legislators like Senator Samra Brouk and electing candidates Kaegan Mays-Wlliams and Kristen Gonzalez we will continue to shape Albany in our images and voices. It is with immense gratitude and love that we announce the transition of Jasmine Fernandez ( Mari Fernández) from our leadership team. For the past 6 years, Jasmine has served at varying capacities of the leadership team. Her amazing work ethic, policy knowledge, and all around grace has been a major anchor for our family. While we are sad to see her go, we are very excited for all the amazing work that she’s heading towards.

Jasmine has been more than just a Leadership Team member, she’s family! The Harvard Educational Leadership Doctorate program will be getting an amazing person who will add so much. We are so proud to see our fellow following her dreams and doing what she does best, pushing for institutions to lead with courage, equity and social justice.

Between the New York City Council budget and the Supreme Court decision, there is a lot to be angry about. You deserve to process and grieve in whichever form works best for you. Take care of yourselves and each other. However, now more than ever, we can't afford to not participate in this election cycle. There is too much on the line to not vote.

We need all hands on deck in Albany to continue to fight for New Yorkers. The best way to protect reproductive rights, affordable housing, and school funding in New York State is to help re-elect these dynamic legislators and help elect our newest . This endorsement announcement was previously scheduled for today, but it has even more meaning now.

We refuse to give up. We remain determined to create a future that centers anti-racism, equity, healing, justice, and joy.

The reality is we may continue to cry, grieve, and seek rest in between, but we won’t let white supremacy win. We will continue to mobilize.

It is with immense pride that we announce our 2022 endorsed slate of new candidates. These brilliant women have outlined platforms and policies that aim to restore and affirm the physical and well-being of all New Yorkers. Some of their shared priorities include:
⁃ Addressing the rampant public health crisis, including combatting gun violence and ensuring affordable and culturally responsive healthcare
⁃ Investing in policies and programs that advance climate justice
⁃ Protecting the rights of immigrants, tenants, and small business owners

Join us in giving these women their flowers 💐 as they’ve been hitting the campaign trail hard!

There are just not the words to capture the grief and pain of the lost lives of more of our fellow Black community members in Buffalo at the hands of yet another white supremacist gunman. These are not isolated instances. These are not the result of lone wolf outliers. Their blood is on the hands of our complicit police departments, tone deaf politicians both local and federal that simultaneously minimize and sensationalize the historical and contemporary violence that the Black community endures in order to prop up and validate the white supremacist culture we live in. This should not have to be said. We should not be here, but here we are.

For over 25 years, Equal Pay Day has raised awareness to gender-based pay disparities. It is sad that women, particularly women of color, continue to be paid less. To make matters worse, the pay disparity by gender & race has only become starker during the pandemic.

We need an intersectional workforce now! Period. So, how do we close the gender pay gap?

Tips for people in leadership positions at organizations:
✨Conduct a pay audit to analyze salaries and promotions by gender & race. Be transparent with your team about these disparities and develop an action plan that will take steps forward to address the disparities.
✨ Don’t rely on salary history when setting pay. Offer a competitive salary based on experience and ensure the salary aligns with the market rate for similar positions.
✨ Analyze your annual compensation review process. How does your process account for bias & ensure pay equity across gender & race?

Tips for women of color employees:
✨ Negotiate your salary; always ask for more. Remember: You are brilliant. Your value & expertise is unmatched.
✨ Advocate for yourself when it comes to your annual raise. Pro tip: Present artifacts that demonstrate ways you’ve exceeded your normal work duties and helped to improve organizational outcomes.
✨ Don’t think twice about applying for a management role within your organization. You, too, are worthy of a promotion.

Tips for everyone:
✨ Elect legislators who will not only advocate, but also offer concrete solutions for closing the pay gap.
