Domestic Violence is a pattern of behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other person.

1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced domestic violence/sexual assault before the age of 18


MYTH: Domestic violence only happens in straight relationships
FACT: Statistics by the NCAVP show that Domestic Violence occurs in 25-30% of same-sex relationships - about equal to the rate of occurrence in straight relationships. MYTH: The law does not protect victims of LGBTQ Domestic Violence
FACT: While police officers may remain confused when attempting to sort out incidents involving same gender couples, THE LAW IS ON YOUR SIDE. ASK YOURSELF:

- Do you feel afraid or responsible for your partners' temper or behavior?
- Does your partner call you names, insult you, or humiliates you - in private or in public?
- Have you been hit, kicked, shoved?
- Are you wrongly accused of having affairs or being unfaithful?
- Does your partner threaten to 'out' you if you do not do what your partner says?
- Have you been forced to have sex? TO GET HELP, REACH OUT - at a safe time CALL

Every year from September 15th to October 15th, NYC uplifts and celebrates the Latina/o/x community during Hispanic Heritage Month. We mark our pride and celebrate our community through parades, block parties, and outdoor festivals. This year, DVP is joining in on that celebration with our own client-led event on October 2nd.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration with DVP will feature special musical performances, cuisines from around the world, and DVP survivor clients sharing their Hispanic pride. We can’t wait to show you more — stay tuned!

Since its establishment in 1995, the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has transformed how our nation responds to domestic violence, s*xual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Service programs like DVP rely on OVW for their leadership and support in protecting survivors across communities.

There’s so much more work to do. You can help us do it by calling your representatives today (202-224-3121) and urge them to oppose the administration’s plan to dismantle the Office on Violence Against Women.

Peer leader spotlight!! DVP’s Peer Leaders are former DVP clients who have attended Empowerment Groups and found their freedom and power in community. Trained in outreach and facilitation, Peer Leaders work in the community — meeting survivors where they are, coordinating resource distribution, organizing community activities. At DVP, we know survivors know best what survivors need. Listening to the clients we work with is not just important — it is the foundation of our organization.

No one should have to face immigration court alone. Everyday, at the Free to Be Youth Project and the Domestic Violence Project, we see how critical legal support is, especially for young q***r and trans people and survivors of abuse. When our clients enter immigration court, they have the support of our wonderful lawyers whose dedicated representation can make life changing differences in case outcomes.
