9/11 is a day of remembrance, grief, and reflection.

For GGE, this day is also part of our own story. The first meeting that led to our creation took place on 9/11. In a moment marked by shock, fear, and uncertainty, GGE began with a simple but lasting act: showing up for Black girls. That commitment to care, connection, and support shaped our vision from the very beginning and continues to ground our work today.

We also remember the harm that followed, including Islamophobia, stop-and-frisk, increased surveillance in homes and schools, and the targeting of Black, Brown, and immigrant communities. In the years after 9/11, many young people came to understand safety through policing, exclusion, and violence.

25 years later, we hold the families who lost loved ones in our hearts. We remain committed to a different vision of safety—rooted in belonging, collective care, and healing justice. We believe New York City is stronger because of our differences, and we will continue advocating for a city where Black girls and gender-expansive youth of color are safer, seen, and resourced.

We honor Gloria Steinem’s extraordinary life and legacy. Through her leadership and the enduring impact of organizations she co-founded, including the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Free to Be Foundation, and the Women's Media Center, Gloria Steinem invited Black feminists into all spaces she curated, generously naming the crosses we bear and the vision we lead. Because of her, generations of advocates have carried forward the work of shifting power, moving resources, and creating space for Black girls and gender-expansive youth of color to lead. We are deeply grateful for her life and for the movement she helped build. Thank you Gloria Steinem may you rest well.

🎉We celebrate the impact of the Own My Future youth leadership development initiative, with New York Liberty and Gallagher!

“I had fun experiencing a community that was focused on bringing people together…It was also fun whenever they highlighted different types of leadership, which reminded us of our power in differences and to play to our strengths.” -M.E.

After months of skill-building with high school girls and gender-expansive youth, it was powerful to see GGE recognized on the court before 17,579 NY Liberty fans, with a generous $10,000 gift in support of this work. We’re grateful for partners who invest in young people, leadership, and the future! 🌟

This Black August, we honor 24 years of centering the leadership of Black girls and gender-expansive youth of color in the movement to end gender and racial-based violence. Grounded in healing, safety, and survivorship justice, we remain committed to building spaces where young people can lead and shape the world around them. Thank you to our partners at me too. International for uplifting our work!

We’re feeling deeply grateful this National Nonprofit Day 💜

Thank you to The NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice Chief Equity Officer and Commissioner Afua Atta-Mensah, Commission on Gender Equity Executive Director Priya Nair, and Mayor's Office of Nonprofit Services Executive Director Annie E. Minguez for honoring us with a Certificate of Recognition for our work advancing gender and racial justice.

We’re proud to be in community with so many partners, advocates, and young leaders who make this work possible every day. This recognition reflects 24 years of power-building, collective action and the unwavering leadership of Black girls and gender-expansive young people of color who continue to shape conversations, challenge systems, and move us toward justice.

We’re also grateful to be in partnership with the NYC Commission on Gender Equity—serving on the city’s Sexual Health Education Task Force and the Ending Gender-Based Violence and Street Harassment Prevention Advisory Boards. We will continue working towards a safer, more equitable NYC for all.

“We’re leaving this moment with a shared commitment to keep building toward a New York where Black girls and gender-expansive young people of color can shape NY to thrive–fully, safely, culturally and for generations to come.” —Joanne N. Smith
