🚢 What Was a “Coffin Ship”?
During the Great Irish Famine, thousands of Irish immigrants boarded overcrowded ships to escape hunger and poverty and seek a new life in America. These vessels became known as “coffin ships” because of the terrible conditions onboard, including disease, limited food and clean water, and the tragic loss of life during the long Atlantic crossing.
Discover the stories behind these harrowing journeys and explore the history of immigration, public health, and New York Harbor at the National Lighthouse Museum’s special America 250th anniversary program.
