St. Rita Center for Immigrant and Refugee Services

St. Rita Center for Immigrant and Refugee Services Our goal is to help each person to build skills to gain confidence in dealing with daily life. Let us continue to work for peace and justice for all! St. Rita's.

Rita's Center for Immigrant and Refugee Services, a program of the Tolentine Zeiser Community Life Center, has brought new hope to newcomers for the past 30+ years. Rita's Asian Center began serving primarily those fleeing the Cambodian-Vietnamese War, who began arriving in the Bronx in 1979. In April 1984, it moved from a small room in the basement of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church to its prese

nt location in the former Augustinian convent. In 1985, St. Rita's formally became a program within the Tolentine Zeiser Community Life Center. As the refugees continued fleeing their war-torn homelands into the early 1990s, St. Rita's expanded its services to include improved social work, the start of citizenship classes, and even putting over 25 young women through Aquinas High School. In 1992, St. Rita's welcomed a new wave of refugees fleeing Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, the Bosnian War. The following year, St. Rita's changed its name to St. Rita's Center for Immigrant and Refugee Services. In the mid-1990s, St. Rita's opened a satellite office in Brighton Beach (Brooklyn) and in Astoria (Queens) to assist the recent arrivals of refugees in those areas. In 1999, St. Rita's began serving the influx of Kosovo Albanians fleeing the Kosovo War. At this point, St. Rita's had five locations: Astoria (Queens), Brighton Beach (Brooklyn), Theodore Roosevelt High School (Bronx), Walton High School (Bronx), and the main office (Bronx). At the beginning of the new millennium, a large group from Mexico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia settled near St. Along with recent migrants from Africa and the Middle East, St. Rita's is truly a place where people from every continent are welcome!

Yasmin set off alone on a horribly risky voyage to Europe, which took her across the Sahara desert and Libya, two death traps for refugees. The journey was especially difficult for Yasmin, whose legs had been badly maimed two years earlier, when her home in Mogadishu was caught in crossfire between the army and Al-Shabaab.

Some say the conditions in Finland and the lengthy asylum process did not meet their expectations, or what they had been told by the people they paid for their travel,' said Tobias van Treeck, programme officer at the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Thousands of Iraqi refugees who arrived in Finland last year have decided to cancel their asylum applications and to return home voluntarily.
