Today is a day of many firsts at Keren Or.

September 1st is the first day of the school year, and the first chance for everyone to be back together.

It's also the first day our students are learning in their new space. Over the summer, our management and maintenance teams moved the school into our newly renovated ground floor.

This floor took years of work and the generosity of many donors to get here. Thank you for making today possible.

Welcome back, Keren Or family!

This summer, our students built Jerusalem with their hands.

Every activity was individually tailored. Some students explored the city through sensory play: animal sounds from the Biblical Zoo, movement games, clay reptiles and pinecone hedgehogs inspired by Jerusalem's gardens.

Others ground spices for their own Mahaneh Yehuda market stand, or built the city's walls out of blocks and cardboard.

We're sad that camp is over, but our students walk into a brand new school year next week!

The Bronfman Fellowship spent the day with us, and it was a joy to have them. These Fellows spend a year exploring big questions together, and today that journey brought them through our doors.

Shira opened with a talk about Keren Or, our students, and the particular challenges of growing up with a visual impairment alongside other complex disabilities. Then we took the group on a tour of the school. Their questions said it all, they weren’t just observing, they genuinely wanted to understand.

Thanks for joining us for the day, we loved having you!

This week, our CEO Shira Reifman is on the road learning, starting at the Perkins School for the Blind Conference on Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI).

Ophthalmologists, educators, parents, researchers, and individuals with CVI themselves came together from 7 countries and 30 US states to share the latest in supporting people with CVI.

For Shira, one of the most powerful parts was hearing individuals with CVI describe, in their own words, what they see and how it shapes their everyday life. It was especially instructive, since most of our Keren Or students aren't able to verbalize what they experience the way these speakers could. Learning like this, directly, helps our whole team understand our students' world a little better.

This week we welcomed 40 teenage girls from NCSY GIVE, for the first of three summer trips to Keren Or. GIVE brings volunteers to Israel for the summer, and they chose to spend an afternoon with our kids.

The visit started with a short intro to Keren Or to understand who our students are, and ways to connect. Then the dance party began. Our students lit up, and the girls joined in. For an hour, everyone danced together.

Thank you GIVE, we’re excited to see you again soon!

Team Keren Or at the Jerusalem Marathon 🏃‍♀️💙

Even though we didn’t have our full team this year, our amazing national service volunteers made sure our students could still be part of it. They took the initiative to bring them out to experience the energy and excitement of the marathon together with the rest of Jerusalem.
