One unique aspect of working with retired Merchant Mariners is hearing the stories of mariners who were meant to be on a voyage that later had a tragedy. One recent story was for the SS Golden Dolphin, where 9 crew were lost in 1982 on March 7. Today, we pause to remember the crew of the SS Golden Dolphin, lost after an explosion and fire in the Atlantic Ocean on March 6, 1982, which led to the ship’s sinking on March 7, 1982.
The tragedy claimed the lives of nine crew members. Their bravery, service, and sacrifice at sea will never be forgotten.

On this day, October 1st, we honor the 33 souls lost aboard the El Faro, which tragically sank near the Bahamas during Hurricane Joaquin in 2015.

192 years ago today, on August 1st, 1833, The Sailors' Snug Harbor opened its doors for the first time and welcomed thirty-seven retired seamen as the first resident-beneficiaries of Captain Randall’s Will. We are honored to continue this mission.

June 5 marks a solemn day in the history of Sailors’ Snug Harbor.
On this day in 1801, our founder and benefactor, Capt. Robert Richard Randall, passed away. His visionary legacy laid the foundation for generations of mariners to receive care and dignity in retirement.

We are honored to carry out your mission, Capt. Randall. Your plan lives on.

SSH is a charity dedicated to assisting retired mariners wherever they live, who need financial assistance and meet the eligibility criteria.

I am very excited to attend the opening of this new exhibit tomorrow.

Join us this Thursday, May 29 from 6 to 8 PM, for the opening reception for We Who Are Weary, our new exhibition which presents a fresh, people-focused perspective on the history of Sailors' Snug Harbor, the 19th-century retirement home for mariners. The displays will include fascinating new research done by Curator Megan Beck, and the focal point of the exhibition is a wall of photographs taken of the resident sailors upon admittance to the home. The stories of six residents are highlighted within the installation, and research assistance was provided by Professor Heather Butts and her students at Columbia University.
