COPA PASSED! ✊🏽💛 But the work isn’t over.

Today marks a major milestone in the fight for community ownership and against displacement in the Bronx and across NYC.

A huge thank you to Council Member Sandy Nurse for championing COPA to the finish line, and to all our coalition members, tenants, organizers, co-sponsors and community members who made this victory possible. This is what happens when we organize, stay united, and keep pushing!

But passage is just one step. Now we must ensure COPA is implemented effectively so community-based organizations and nonprofits have a real opportunity to preserve affordable housing and keep our neighbors in their homes.

We’re celebrating today, but we’re not slowing down. Our Bronx will continue fighting for community ownership, housing justice, and a future where longtime residents can afford to stay.

The work doesn’t end with passage. This is just the beginning! 💛🏘️

BUILDING AN ECONOMY WE CAN OWN TOGETHER ✊🏽

What would it look like if our communities had more power over the economy we depend on?

Join us this Saturday, October 24, for our October Community Meeting as we celebrate National Cooperative Month and explore how cooperative ownership, worker power, and economic democracy can help build a more just future.

We’re bringing together cooperative leaders, organizers, and community members for a mini-summit featuring three interactive sessions:

🎲 Co-opoly: Learn about cooperation and collective ownership through a fun, interactive game.
❤️ Health Justice + Economic Justice: Explore how worker ownership and workplace democracy connect to health, racial, and economic justice.
✊🏽 Worker Ownership + Power: Learn from organizers fighting for workers’ first opportunity to buy the businesses where they work, and what that could mean for New York.

📣 GOOD NEWS: COPA IS SCHEDULED FOR A VOTE ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22!

Now we need all hands on deck to help get it passed!

Why are we fighting for COPA?

Because our communities deserve a say in what happens to our homes.

Our Bronx joined tenants, community organizations, and elected officials at City Hall to call for action on COPA. During the City Council’s Housing and Buildings Committee hearing, Bronx residents and advocates shared why we need stronger tools to preserve affordable housing and protect our communities from displacement.

COPA would give qualified entities an opportunity to purchase certain residential properties when owners decide to sell, creating a pathway to preserve affordability and keep buildings in community-serving hands.

Our testimonies made clear what’s at stake: the future of our homes, our neighborhoods, and the people who make the Bronx what it is.

COPA is close to passage. A strong City Council majority supports the bill, Mayor Mamdani has made it a housing priority and committed to signing it.

We only have one week to make it happen. Let’s get COPA passed!

October is National Co-op Month!

Cooperatives are businesses and organizations built around shared ownership, shared decision-making, and shared benefit. Across the Bronx, cooperative models have helped communities create worker-owned businesses, build economic power, and keep wealth rooted in the neighborhoods where people live and work.

This October, Our Bronx is kicking off Co-op Month with a virtual teach-in to explore:

🌱 What can a solidarity economy mean for our communities?

A Huge Loss for the Bronx 🖤📰

Norwood News has published its final print edition this August and is beginning an indefinite hiatus in both print and online. We’re taking a moment to honor what this longtime community newspaper has meant to the Bronx, to Our Bronx, and to the generations of Bronx residents and organizers whose stories filled its pages.

For decades, Norwood News showed up for NWBCCC (now Our Bronx), documenting housing struggles, community fights, neighborhood victories, and the people organizing to build a better borough. Its reporting helped preserve our history and the record of residents building power together.

We’re especially grateful that Our Bronx was part of Norwood News’ final print chapter with "From NWBCCC to Our Bronx: Building Community Power Across Generations.” The story reflects a history that stretches from the founding of the Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition in 1974 to Our Bronx today, and the generations of Bronx residents who have continued the work of building community power and shaping the future of their neighborhoods.

The loss of Norwood News is felt deeply. The Bronx needs local journalism that knows our communities, tells our stories, and makes sure our history doesn’t disappear.

Thank you, Norwood News, for being part of that history and for telling our stories for so many years.
