The Nordic Consul Generals in New York — Helle Meinertz, Jarmo Sareva, Jo Sletbak and Erik Ullenhag —visited the recently reopened New Museum together in late May. They were hosted by Kraus Family Senior Curator Gary Carrion-Murayari and Vice President of Advancement Diane Vivona.

Several Nordic artists have been featured in the current exhibition “New Humans” — Charlotte Johannesson, Asger Jorn, Sidsel Meineche Hansen, Lennart Nilsson, Henrik Olesen, Ovartaci, Hariton Pushwagner, Hannah Ryggen, Jenna Sutela and Ulla Wiggen. We hope to see more Nordic artists displayed there in the future.

Cultural affairs, creative industries and diplomacy through art are important to all Nordic countries, and we work together to increase the visibility of Nordic art and design internationally.

Out of Silence, a sound installation by .rosenstrom, curated by .grsh is now open at on Roosevelt Island through June 21.

Inspired by the music of Arvo Pärt and the architecture of Louis Kahn, the piece was created in collaboration with the vocal ensemble .ee.

Out of Silence is generously supported by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation; the Ministry of Culture of Estonia; Saastamoinen Foundation; The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland; the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (FCINY); and the Consulate General of Finland in New York.

We’re proud to present Out of Silence, a sound installation by Hans Rosenström (.rosenstrom), curated by Alina Girshovich (.grsh), now open at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park on Roosevelt Island through June 21.

Inspired by the music of Arvo Pärt and the architecture of Louis Kahn, the installation was created in partnership with the vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis (.ee). Speaking to the power of the human voice and the importance of silence and presence, the work unfolds as a spatial journey through the park, encouraging visitors to move, listen, and connect.

Out of Silence is generously supported by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation; the Ministry of Culture of Estonia; Saastamoinen Foundation; The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland; the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (FCINY); and the Consulate General of Finland in New York.

Did you know there’s Finnish architecture at ? 🇫🇮

Head of Cultural Affairs and Creative Industries at the Consulate, Anssi Vallius visited for its 40th Anniversary Celebration and visited three sites of Finnish architecture on campus.

🔷 Kresge Auditorium and MIT Chapel by Eero Saarinen

The MIT chapel and the auditorium next to it are manifestations of Eero Saarinen’s vision to develop modernist architecture and shake its rectangular, rigorous thinking.

The auditorium’s triangular concrete dome stands on three embedded supports with walls made of glass between them. In contrast, the chapel is a circular, closed red brick cylinder. Lighting is an integral part of the chapel, carefully studied by Saarinen using scale models.

🔷 Baker House by Alvar Aalto

Baker House was a turning point in Alvar Aalto’s practice. First invited to MIT as a lecturer, he later returned with Aino Aalto to design the dormitory.

The building follows modernist spatial logic, but its irregular, undulating shape highlights the human experience of moving through space. Aalto described the bricks used for the flowing façade as “the lousiest bricks in the world.” Aino Aalto designed the custom furniture for the rooms.

Kaija Saariaho’s Innocence premiered at the this week to widespread critical acclaim. called it “an early contender for one of this century’s great operas”.

We were proud to collaborate with the Barry S. Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation at on the two-day conference “Voicing Innocence”, highlighting the work and legacy of the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho.

The conference brought together key artists from the production, including .barriere, Jean-Baptiste Barrière, .jaa, and , alongside researchers from the , , and more, who presented their research on Saariaho’s work.

To mark this important week for Finnish art, Consul General Jarmo Sareva hosted a reception celebrating the artists, researchers, and partners behind Innocence.

From one Met to another, last weekend also concluded the Helene Schjerfbeck exhibition at the , another highlight of Finnish art in New York this season.

Innocence, conducted by Maestro will run at The Metropolitan Opera until April 29.
