ROLLBACK THE RENT
GIMMIE A KISS
KNICKS KNICKS KNICKS
IN SIX

All month YAH will be rallying & testifying before the Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) for a rent rollback (decrease in rent) for rent stabilized housing in NYC. Some highlights from The Bronx hearing yesterday:

🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

SAFI:
“We currently have 118 violations, & have had hundreds for years. And in the middle of living like this, they chose to evict us. We’re RENT BURDENED and are paying more than ⅓ of our income on rent and maintenance, this is a record year for peoples’ burdened rent. I love my community, I love Queens and I love my city. My neighbors & I will not be displaced…The people who built this city CANNOT afford a rent increase…. Did you just hear the tenant who said that their 14 year old is excited to work to help with the rent? …our children deserve to stay in school. Our children deserve to live in our city. They should not be worried about paying the fu***ng rent. ROLLBACK THE RENT NOW!”

MARIAM:
“My uncle admitted to me recently that he wasn’t able to afford his rent anymore & he needed my help to pay it. He has poured his heart into this city as a yellow cab driver up until his retirement a year ago… but now 72% of his social security check goes towards keeping a roof over his head.
My uncle is my only surviving family member from Cote D’ivoire. And my only connection left to my father…I do what I can to pay his rent every month, but that isn’t sustainable either. I, like many other New Yorkers can barely afford to pay my rent, so I ask all of you up there - can you imagine having to pay two NYC rents every month? All on your own? Stop making New York City so unlivable, financially prohibitive, & unsustainable for its inhabitants. ROLL BACK THE RENT”

The Mayor’s Office To Protect Tenants is hosting a Rental Ripoff Hearing THIS SATURDAY, March 28, 2026 from 11am-5:30pm @ Esperanza Preparatory Magnet School in East Harlem (240 East 109th Street, 10029).

These hearings are an opportunity for New Yorkers from all five boroughs a direct platform to share testimony to city agencies such as the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the Department of Buildings and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to support the city in developing a report that will be used to inform housing policy. This isn’t a permanent solution, but an opportunity for New Yorkers to let their voices be heard because WE MATTER!!!

You DO NOT have to live in Manhattan to testify! You can submit your testimony online (check link or QR code on the flyer) or share in-person at a hearing that is most convenient for you. The link to the pre-registration for in-person is closed, meaning they are at capacity for the Manhattan hearing.

FOR NYCHA TENANTS: senior leadership and staff will be on-site to ensure residents can submit in-apartment repair requests, file heat/hot water complaints, or discuss development-wide issues.

YAH is teaming up with in solidarity to support with phone banking for their March 1st Rent Strike Drive.

Tenants across Minneapolis & St. Paul are organizing citywide. Labor and tenant unions in Minneapolis and St. Paul, representing more than 25,900 members, announced a March 1 rent strike drive, vowing to show an unprecedented expression of economic power to ensure an eviction moratorium from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and a $50 million rent relief fund from the state legislature.

The purpose of the rent strike: create an economic disruption to get ICE out of the Twin Cities, provide an eviction moratorium - no evictions under occupation, provide rent relief and build solidarity amongst tenants.

The goal: 10,000 tenants commit to withhold rent on March 1st

Sign up to phone bank with YAH’s sponsored phone banking sessions listed above or hop on one of daily phone banking from 6:30pm-9pm EST/5:30pm-8pm CT.
