U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York marked the transfer of leadership during a Change of Command Ceremony, where Captain Doreen McCarthy assumed command, relieving Captain Johnathan Andrechik.

As the new Commander of Sector New York, Captain McCarthy will also serve as the Captain of the Port for the Port of New York and New Jersey, leading Coast Guard operations in one of the nation's busiest and most strategically significant maritime regions.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Captain Andrechik for his dedicated leadership and distinguished service to the Coast Guard, the maritime community, and the people of New York and New Jersey.

We also welcome Captain McCarthy as she assumes command and leads the men and women of Sector New York in executing the Coast Guard's missions of maritime safety, security, and stewardship.

Please join us in thanking Captain Andrechik for his service and congratulating Captain McCarthy on assuming command.

U.S. Coast Guard New York has issued five Marine Safety Information Bulletins covering waterway restrictions, safety zones, and operational guidance for mariners in New York Harbor from July 1–9, 2026. Key points:
Security zones are in effect around all Tall Ships and naval vessels
Spectator Areas 1–9 open July 3 at 3 p.m. — first come, first serve!
Main shipping channel closes July 4 starting at 6 a.m.
Macy's fireworks SLR in effect 4 p.m.–11:30 p.m. July 4
NY State Boater Safety Card required to operate a vessel

As temperatures warm this week, please remember that ice on lakes, ponds, rivers, salt water, and tidal water areas can be unstable and dangerous, especially after fluctuating temperatures. Salt water and tidal water freeze at lower temperatures and may be thinner or weaker than freshwater ice. Never assume ice is safe simply because it appears solid. Avoid ice near moving water, bridges, docks, inlets, or tidal areas, where ice strength is unpredictable. Always closely supervise children on the ice.

If you see someone fall through the ice, call 911 right away. Do not attempt a rescue unless you have proper equipment, many individuals trying to assist become victims themselves.

Stay safe and enjoy outdoor activities responsibly as conditions continue to change.

Coastal areas from Massachusetts to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, are expected to have gusts of 30-40 mph and heavy freezing spray this weekend.

Heavy freezing spray accumulates ice on a vessel at a rate of two cm per hour or more. The combination of weather, sea state and vessel movement all cause the icy conditions.

All mariners should prepare for the dangerous accumulation of ice on their vessel. If planning on getting underway, take a look at the warning below to determine a best course and find safe harbor if needed.
