Support the National Lawyers Guild Against State Department Attacks

The National Lawyers Guild, which has provided legal support for people's movements for justice and democracy since 1937, has been targeted by right wing US administrations since its inception. Reviving cold-war conspiracy theories used to attack political dissent during the McCarthy era, the State Department released a 99-page report in July 2026 that specifically targets the NLG along with 39 other left-leaning organizations as purported Cuban "front groups.”

The report attempts to demonize, even criminalize, decades of broad-based organizing in solidarity with the people of Cuba, and work to end a 60-plus year-old US financial and economic blockade that has amounted to a slow genocide against its citizens. Days before the report was issued, officials hosted a red-baiting conference at the State Department to create a false narrative of the "resurgence of far-left political terrorism,” and referring to left movements as "enemies of civilization.”

The US is starkly out of step with the majority 187 United Nations member states who have opposed the blockade of Cuba for years. The NLG is proud to continue this vital work of advocacy and solidarity with the people of Cuba. We also stand defiantly against the increased political repression faced by the NLG and the movements for social change we support, but we need your help.

In these turbulent times, we hope you will generously support the National Lawyers Guild. The Administration's current attack does not aim to merely silence speech, but to assault an organization whose nearly 90 years of solidarity with social justice movements brings fear to a right-wing administration that routinely flouts our Constitution and bedrock international democratic principles. Continuing the NLG's work while protecting it legally against these attacks requires financial support. When we stand together, we win. The fight continues!

A cleaner New York Harbor has drawn hundreds of humpback whales back to its waters for the first time in generations, but the same busy port that welcomes them is also killing them.

9/11’s UNSETTLED DUST

THIS Friday, September 11 @ 6:30 pm EST, with NLG-NYC member Joel R Kupferman!

Days after the 9/11 terrorist attack and collapse of the World Trade towers, EPA head Christine Todd Whitman declared that the air in New York City was safe—in spite of overwhelming sensory and scientific evidence to the contrary. 9/11’s UNSETTLED DUST examines the widespread dereliction of duty on the part of the EPA, and the Bush and Giuliani administrations for providing false assurances rather than protecting the public from environmental harms and their deadly health impacts. Several whistleblowers—including environmental attorney Joel Kupferman, journalist Juan Gonzalez, and EPA analyst Hugh Kaufman—reveal both the horrifically unprecedented extent of the toxins, and the political and economic motivations that kept those working at Ground Zero and the public in the dark; and the film follows John Feal, a former construction worker who lost a foot at Ground Zero, as he coalesces and leads a grassroots group of sick 9/11 responders, residents, and workers to call on members of Congress to pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

9/11’s UNSETTLED DUST exposes the painful contradictions between the personal sacrifices made by the more than 50,000 men and women who toiled at Ground Zero to serve the common good and honor those who died, and the politicians and elected officials who for years praised 9/11 heroes for their patriotism yet denied both the personal cost these men and women paid for their heroism and their need for help.

Film Forum presents this film on the 25th commemoration of the 9/11 attacks.

Each year, the NLG convenes our members and allies nationwide to make decisions about our governance and organizational policies, engage in political education and legal skills building, and discuss issues pertinent to the movements we serve.

You may have heard about our comrades in the National Lawyers Guild Detroit & Michigan Chapter who gave us the evergreen reminder about shutting the f*ck up when interacting with police. Detroit attorneys were among the founding members of the NLG in 1937. Two of these attorneys, Maurice Sugar and Ernest Goodman, began the Sugar Law Center for Economic & Social Justice, a Detroit law firm, that was active in defending workers and their unions, such as the United Auto Workers, and representing Black people who were being harassed by the police. With civil rights leaders and activists George Crockett, Jr., Bob Millender, and Claudia Morcom, Ernest went on to found Goodman, Eden, Crockett, Millender, and Bedrosian, the first racially integrated law firm in the country.

The schedule of CLEs, major panels, workshops, receptions, plenaries, and special events is coming soon--stay tuned for updates. Register early for discounted rates!
