What changes when young people have the mic? The Fund, established by The Foundation in 2015, support girls, young women, and gender-expansive youth, especially people of color, and addresses disparities resulting from gender and racial inequity.

During Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in 2025, Day One’s Youth Advisory Board invited young people across NYC to respond to one simple prompt: “Love can be…”

Through poetry, essays, stories, music, and dance, young people came together to reflect on healthy relationships, share their experiences, support one another, and lead conversations about preventing violence.

It’s one example of how The Foundation supports community-led organizations working toward a future where women, girls, and gender-expansive people can thrive.

On November 10, The New York Women’s Foundation’s 2026 Neighborhood Dinner brings that spirit to Queens, one of the most vibrant and diverse places in the world. “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

On August 26, 1920, the U.S. federal government certified the ratification of the 19th Amendment, marking a historic victory in the fight for women’s suffrage. But it was neither the beginning nor the end of the struggle.

By the mid-19th century, the woman suffrage movement was in full swing. Suffragists organized, lectured, wrote, marched, and lobbied to achieve the right to vote. The amendment was first introduced to Congress in 1878, but it would take several more attempts before it finally passed both the House and Senate in the summer of 1920. By then, few early supporters lived to see final victory.

The fight for voting rights did not end in 1920. Women of color continued to face discriminatory laws and practices that blocked access to the ballot for decades.

Since the 1970s, August 26 has been officially recognized as Women’s Equality Day. It is a day to honor those who fought for change, reflect on how far we’ve come, and remember the work that remains.

What does it take to build a future where women, girls, and gender-expansive people can thrive? It takes bold ideas, strong communities — and rest. 🌻

From Monday, August 24 through Monday, September 7, The New York Women’s Foundation will pause operations for a restorative break. This time gives our staff space to step back, reflect, and recharge so we can return with the energy and imagination this work deserves.

Rest is not separate from our mission. It helps sustain the people who invest in community-led solutions, nurture partnerships, and expand opportunity across New York City and beyond.

We’re grateful to our community for making this pause possible. We look forward to reconnecting on Tuesday, September 8—rested, renewed, and ready to continue building a fair future together.

Black Philanthropy Month celebrates a long history of giving and recognizes the generosity, leadership, and collective action that continue to strengthen communities today. It also raises an important question for philanthropy: Who gets to decide where resources go?

That question is central to The New York Women's Foundation approach. Through participatory grantmaking, community members help shape funding decisions, bringing lived experience and community knowledge directly to the process.

We are proud to honor Gotham FC with the Queens Champion Award at The New York Women's Foundation's 2026 Neighborhood Dinner.

Gotham FC leverages women’s professional soccer to expand access and opportunity and strengthen communities across New York and New Jersey. Its work is guided by four pillars: youth access to soccer, LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusion, women’s advancement, and sustainability.

Carolyn Tisch Blodgett, Club Governor of Gotham FC, National Women's Soccer League Board Member, and Chair of the NWSL Executive Committee, will join us to accept the Queens Champion Award on behalf of the Club.
