Last Friday, CASES Pretrial Services teams gathered to celebrate the department's 10-year anniversary! For the past decade, Pretrial has supported New Yorkers to avoid the harms of unnecessary bail, jail, and prison through accessible, community-based mental health, substance use treatment, and employment programs.

What started as a small team in 2016 has grown to more than 200 staff serving participants across several offices citywide. This field day was a chance to celebrate that incredible growth, connect across teams, and recognize the people who make this work possible every day.

July is Disability Pride Month. Pride also means confronting where our systems fail disabled people most. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, people with disabilities are overrepresented at every level of the criminal legal system, from jail and prison to probation and parole. Compared to 15% of the general population in America, 40% of people in State prison have a disability, including both cognitive and physical disabilities.
