Young Progressive Democrats is a grassroots political organization that gives voice to young, civic minded individuals who seek to champion the needs of their communities, affect change in public policies and engage in political campaigns. We are activists for social, economic, and environmental justice. We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, fighting for the issues facing our communi

ties – decent paying jobs, affordable housing, immigration struggles, civil rights, voting rights and equity in transportation, health care and education. Formed by a group of young college students in 2008, YPD works along side local community based organizations to broaden services to our communities. We work to feed needy families and we march in protest, alongside our union brothers and sisters, to stop the hypocrisy of corporate greed on the backs of our communities! We fight for what we believe in and we use all resources available to get our message out. YPD serves as a training ground for all young leaders who wish to become involved in politics and community service. We believe that we can effect change by making our voices heard at all levels of government. YPD is committed to training the next generation of democratic leaders to serve the needs of the many diverse communities across the 5 boroughs. YPD supports the desire of young people to run for public office. We are a generation of young progressive leaders, working block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, to make our mark on our communities.

This is one of those pivotal moments when every one of us, as citizens of the United States, need to determine just who it is that we are. Just what it is that we stand for. And as a fellow citizen, not as an ex-president, I delivered a simple message to students at the University of Illinois today. You need to vote, because our democracy depends on it.

The biggest threat to our democracy doesn't come from any one person. The biggest threat to our democracy is indifference. The biggest threat to our democracy is cynicism – a cynicism that’s led too many people to turn away from politics, and to stay home on Election Day.

The antidote to government by the powerful few is democracy by the organized many.

If you get involved, and engaged, and knock on some doors, and talk with your friends, and argue with your family members, and change some minds, and vote – then something powerful happens. Change happens. Hope happens. With each new candidate that surprises you with a victory, a spark of hope happens. With each new law that helps a kid read, or a poor family find shelter, or a veteran get the support he or she has earned, hope happens. With each new step we take in the direction of fairness, and justice, and equality, and opportunity, hope spreads.

I believe that can be the legacy of your generation. You can be the generation that stood up and reminded us just how precious democracy is, and just how powerful it can be when we fight for it. I believe you will. Because I believe in you. And I’ll be right there alongside you, every step of the way.

Dear Community Members,

On Sunday June 9th, 2013 the Puerto Rican Day Parade will take place in Manhattan starting at 11:00 AM along Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street.

As many of us in Sunset Park know, the festivities continue here in Sunset Park, Brooklyn on 5th Avenue, as many from the parade celebrate their heritage by driving in cars with their music playing and flags waving.

In an effort to avoid any safety hazards, the following street closures will take place here in Sunset Park Brooklyn from 3:00 PM through 8:00 PM:

From 43rd Street to 60th Street, vehicular traffic may flow north and south on 5th Ave.
East and West vehicular traffic will be shut down from 43rd Street to 60th Street between 4th, 5th and 6th Avenues.
For anyone who lives on these blocks, you may drive to and from your home with proper photo identification showing proof of address.
All other vehicles will be turned away to alleviate an overflow of vehicular traffic.
There will be no restrictions on pedestrian traffic.

VERY IMPORTANT:
There will be a "Zero-Tolerance" policy for any quality of life violations observed, specifically drinking alcohol in public and grilling on the sidewalk with BBQ grills.
Please inform your neighbors, friends, family, constituents and customers of these rules and regulations so we can all have a safe and enjoyable Puerto Rican Day Celebration here in our amazing community of Sunset Park, Brooklyn!
