MOIA celebrated the Year of the Fire Horse 2153 at a Losar event hosted by Bhotekashi Samaj,a community organization serving Tibetan and Nepali-speaking New Yorkers.

During the event, our team shared information on Know Your Rights (KYR) with ICE, NYC’s Sanctuary City Law, and what to do if friends or family members are detained by ICE. We also distributed three multilingual resource booklets to more than 300 attendees.

MOIA is proud to make immigrant rights resources accessible in languages beyond the city’s top 10, including Tibetan and Nepali, so that more communities can stay informed and protected.

Last week, our staff member Tenzin Tseyang attended His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th Year Celebration in Woodside, Queens, a Buddhist faith-based event with Khensur Jhado Tulku Rinpoche as the chief guest. During the event, she shared MOIA’s impactful work and results aimed at improving the well-being of Tibetan immigrants in New York City.

📌 Key MOIA Achievements Shared with the Community
1️⃣IDNYC new law now officially accepts the Tibetan Green Book for NYC’s municipal ID enrollment.
2️⃣Immigration information booklets are now available in Tibetan, including Know Your Rights with ICE, Sanctuary City Law, and What to Do if Friends or Family Are Detained by ICE—coming soon to MOIA’s website.
3️⃣ NYC’s first official Tibetan-language page was launched earlier this year to share timely and trusted information with Tibetan New Yorkers.
4️⃣ The Little Bhod–Tibet Immigrant Illustration, created to honor and celebrate the Tibetan community.
5️⃣ Our staff also reassured attendees that safe and trusted immigration legal support is available and encouraged them to call MOIA’s hotline.

Last week, our office celebrated the diverse and vibrant immigrant communities of New York City by honoring their heritage through an Immigrant Enclave Illustration Series Exhibit.

In collaboration with community partners, we showcased 23 illustrations representing 23 different communities, including “Little Bhod-Tibet.” We were pleased to have some Tibetan community members join us, along with many other immigrant community leaders. On December 10, 1989, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his exemplary commitment to non-violence, tolerance, and universal compassion. Today, the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs commemorates the 36th Anniversary of the Conferment of Nobel Peace Prize Award which is a significant day for Tibetan New Yorkers who revere His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and follows his path. Our office takes inspiration from his leadership and commits to serve and lead with peace, non-violence, and compassion.
