Recent federal SNAP changes are making it harder for many families to access food assistance and as a result, more people are relying on pantries to make ends meet.

At New York Common Pantry, we’re seeing longer lines and an increase in demand for our services. To meet this need, NYCP is advocating to protect food access and to support emergency food providers.

Congratulations to our very own W. Santana on being selected as one of The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center’s 40 Under 40 recipients! The awards are given to up-and-coming leaders across the food system whose work is making a measurable difference.

As a bilingual Case Manager at New York Common Pantry, W. is dedicated to helping individuals and families access essential resources and support services. She understands the stigma that can come with asking for help and meets every guest with compassion and respect, guiding them through applications and supporting them every step of the way.

"A lot of people are struggling quietly because they feel ashamed to ask for food assistance. I see how much that pride and fear keep people from accessing what they need. Food is a basic human right — no one should feel embarrassed for needing it," she says.

We are proud to celebrate W.’s leadership and commitment to strengthening communities across New York City with dignity and care. Join us in congratulating her!

Yesterday, at City Hall, emergency food providers and advocates came together to call for $100 million in baseline funding for Community Food Connection (CFC) – a program providing funding to more than 700 community kitchens and food pantries across New York City.

As New Yorkers continue to face an affordability crisis and devastating SNAP cuts, more families are turning to food pantries to make ends meet. Without increased funding, emergency food providers will struggle to keep up with the growing demand and force pantries to limit services or turn neighbors away.

No one in our city should go hungry. Contact your council members today and tell them to support funding for food access.

Yesterday’s free Health Fair & Cancer Screening Event hosted by Mount Sinai's Tisch Cancer Center and the Community Healthcare Network at New York Common Pantry helped ensure vital health care resources were available to the community. Participants received health education on a variety of common cancers, health insurance enrollment and navigation help, PSA blood testing for prostate cancer, and an opportunity to talk to a primary care doctor about cancer screenings.

We are grateful to all healthcare professionals and community partners who continue to work toward healthier communities through education, prevention, and care.
