New Yorkers experiencing homelessness shouldn’t fall through the cracks simply because the people trying to help them are operating in different systems.

That’s why Assemblymember Tony Simone and I introduced legislation to create Neighborhood Street Teams, bringing homeless outreach workers, health care providers, housing professionals and other service providers together with clear rules for securely sharing critical information and coordinating care.

A version of this approach is already being used and expanded in California. New York should follow suit.

Better communication means less duplication, stronger coordination and a better chance of connecting people on our streets with the housing and services they need.

Thank you to CBS6 Albany for covering our effort to bring this model to communities across New York State. https://cbs6albany.com/news/local/new-bill-aims-to-break-down-barriers-organizations-looking-to-help-the-unhoused-social-services-homelessness-mental-illness-addiction-new-york-legislation-multidisciplinary-teams-information-sharing-coordinated-care-street-outreach-new-york-state-city?fbclid=IwY2xjawUVjQJwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMWQ2bXZ0c2cwaHZvbW5ZY3JzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEe8fUU9_FwZKPYu0LvXCYoLcDPY4E2JWtnqdAx6njtCKJXiIIH9XtuvtSjAMQ_aem_jv5OCTgSf6HVLLqDQUF74w

I toured AIDS Healthcare Foundation Hell’s Kitchen Wellness Center and their new pharmacy to learn more about the care and services they provide right here in our community.

AHF is the world’s largest global nonprofit provider of HIV/AIDS medical care, serving more than 2.5 million people in 50 countries. We also discussed how we can make HIV prevention medication more accessible.

I was proud to pass S10467, legislation that would allow trained pharmacists to furnish HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), helping more New Yorkers access lifesaving preventive care quickly and conveniently—especially those who may not have a regular healthcare provider.

AHF has several locations throughout Senate District 47, including an AHF Healthcare Center at 365A W. 28th Street in Penn South.

AHF Wellness Center – Hell's Kitchen
📍 315 West 50th Street
Provides confidential HIV and STD testing, treatment, and access to prevention resources like PrEP and PEP.

It was great to see firsthand the important work AHF is doing to make healthcare more accessible in our community.

For 100 years, the Martha Graham Dance Company has called New York City home, creating art here that has changed dance around the world.

I was thrilled to join State Senator Liz Krueger and Council Member Carl Wilson to cut the ribbon on the beautiful new Martha Graham Dance Center at 1501 Broadway, in the heart of Times Square, and celebrate the beginning of its next century.

New York has always been a place where artists come with a dream, find one another, take risks, and create something the world has never seen before. Places like this ensure that will remain true for generations to come.

Here’s to the next 100 years of Martha Graham Dance, right here in New York City! 🩰🗽

It was great joining Amsterdam Houses Tenant Association President Yvette Powell for a walkthrough of the NYCHA Amsterdam Houses campus.

We talked about ways to uplift the campus, from replacing aging benches and repaving walking surfaces to beautifying community gardens. We also discussed quality-of-life issues important to tenants, including extending laundry room hours.

I’m grateful to President Powell and the residents who continue to advocate for their community. I look forward to working together to get these improvements done.

A lift for a beloved Hell’s Kitchen institution! 🎉

We celebrated the reopening of the elevator at Encore Community Services, a beloved social services provider that has been serving older New Yorkers and our community for decades.

When I represented this neighborhood in the City Council, I was proud to allocate discretionary funding to help make this elevator project possible. Now, as State Senator, it was wonderful to return with Council Member Carl Wilson and the Encore team to cut the ribbon and see it back in service.

Investments like this help ensure that vital community spaces are accessible to everyone. Congratulations, Encore! ❤️

The heroes of 9/11 included the building service workers whose quick thinking and bravery helped save thousands of lives.

Earlier this week, 32BJ SEIU honored the 24 union members who lost their lives on September 11 and reflected on the security officers and other workers who helped guide people to safety amid unimaginable chaos.

In the aftermath of 9/11, 32BJ launched a campaign to uplift and organize thousands of security officers across New York City. Now, the union is taking that fight to new heights with an ambitious campaign to organize more than 50,000 security officers and ensure they have the wages, protections, and voice on the job they deserve.

It was an honor to stand with 32BJ, Senator-elect Jessica González-Rojas, and Samuel Levine, Commissioner of New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, as we remembered those we lost and recommitted ourselves to standing with the workers who keep New Yorkers safe every day.

Today at the Firefighters Memorial on Riverside Drive, we gathered to honor the 343 members of the FDNY who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, we remember their extraordinary courage and sacrifice, and all those in the FDNY family who have carried the weight of that day ever since.

We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice of those who ran into danger so that others might live.
