The 9/11 Memorial remembers and honors the 2,983 people who were killed in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The design, created by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, consists of two reflecting pools formed in the footprints of the original Twin Towers and a plaza of trees. The 9/11 Memorial Museum displays monumental artifacts linked to the events of 9/11, while presenting intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning, and recovery that are central to telling the story of the 2001 and 1993 attacks and the aftermath.

Olivia Perez-Johntry was just 10 years old when her father, Anthony Perez, was killed in the North Tower on September 11, 2001.

Perez-Johntry is now a high school science teacher, using her experience to remind her students that they can survive hardship.

Each 9/11, Tribute in Light gives us a way to carry stories like Perez-Johntry’s forward, as two beams of light rise above New York City in honor of the nearly 3,000 people we lost.

Join us Friday, September 11, at 8 PM ET for “9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan,” presented by ABC News in partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. We join the City of New York and communities around the world in honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost, and the survivors, first responders and families forever changed. This remembrance is deeply personal for BNY. Our current headquarters stands mere blocks from the World Trade Center, and we were one of the first companies to support the creation of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

Today, that responsibility is reflected in the places and stories we help to preserve. The Survivors' Stairs—one of the last visible remnants of the World Trade Center, used by hundreds to escape that day—stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and renewal. BNY is proud to support the Museum's new “In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11-Inspired Service" exhibit, helping younger generations learn about that day and carry its meaning forward.

Carlton Shelley was a student at the school where President George W. Bush learned about the attacks on September 11, 2001. Today, a veteran, Shelley continues to carry the memory of that day and its impact forward.
