The Caribbean American Center of New York & Friends mourns the passing and celebrates the remarkable life of Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow. 🕊️

Sparrow’s story began in Grenada, took root in Trinidad, and traveled wherever Caribbean people made a home. From singing in the church choir to his breakthrough with “Jean and Dinah,” he brought wit, joy, and fearless storytelling to calypso. His voice became part of the soundtrack of our lives.

We will always cherish the honor of presenting the Calypso King of the World’s 70th birthday celebration at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. That gathering remains a treasured part of our Center’s history and a reminder of how his music brought our community together.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Thank you, Mighty Sparrow, for the songs, the laughter, and the stories you gave us. Your legacy will live on in every generation that sings along.

The Caribbean American Center of New York (CACNY) is proud to implement the Growing Skills, Growing Income: Youth Agricultural Enterprise project in partnership with Nightingale Grove Primary School in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, with grant funding awarded by the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ).

Through hands-on agricultural and entrepreneurship activities, students are learning practical skills in land preparation, raised-bed construction, seed selection, planting, cultivation, and eventually harvesting and marketing their crops. The program also promotes teamwork, responsibility, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship while introducing young people to agriculture as a pathway to future opportunity.

🌱 Growing skills today. Planting opportunities for tomorrow.

Caribbean Americans are an essential part of the cultural fabric of the United States. From music and the arts to business, education, public service, and community leadership, our people continue to transform Caribbean heritage into a powerful global legacy.

This moment is a reminder that behind every achievement stands a story of sacrifice, discipline, family, resilience, and pride in where we come from. Our rhythms, voices, and traditions do more than entertain—they connect generations, strengthen communities, and inspire the world.

Let us continue to celebrate the artists, visionaries, organizers, and supporters who carry Caribbean culture forward.
