Bard Early College Summer Intensive 2026 ✨

This year’s session featured live theater, exploration of cultural sites, creative writing, and deepening our understanding of the past and present history of Berlin. Together with their early college peers from different Bard Early College campuses, students dove into the immersive experience of living and studying abroad.

The summer intensive, like the early college model, strives to deliver a serious academic experience while exposing students to opportunities, ideas, and knowledge that both question and expand their worldview.

Thanks as always to our program team and our incredible partners at Bard College Berlin for hosting us and collaborating on this experience.

Ariella Thompson, BHSEC Bronx ’27, coauthored an opinion piece with Luis R. Sepulveda, the New York State Senator for the Bronx’s 32nd district, for New York Daily News.

The op-ed highlights how success at Bard is not just defined by grades, but by a deepened intellectual curiosity and confidence in students. Programs like BHSEC Bronx achieve this outcome by deliberately rethinking how we educate students and prepare them in practice, not just in theory, for all that follows a high school degree.

“This style of learning teaches us intellectual confidence,” Ariella shares. “Seminar discussions require students to speak thoughtfully, listen carefully, and understand that learning is not just about following instructions, but also about developing our own ideas. Instead of waiting until adulthood to be treated as serious thinkers, we begin developing that identity while still in high school.”

Senator Sepulveda elaborates that “programs such as BHSEC Bronx exist because educators, institutions, and public leaders make a deliberate decision to invest in students and expand access to opportunities that have historically been out of reach for many young people.”

During the month of March, we celebrate civic engagement across the early college network by highlighting some of the work of our students, faculty, and staff around advocacy, policy, and community engagement.

This year, the Bard community has participated in advocacy efforts with New York State officials, volunteered time with community organizations, hosted a voter registration drive, kickstarted school-wide food waste initiatives, and sat in on arguments at the United States Supreme Court. This is just a small sample of the incredible civic engagement we see in our schools every day.
